Customer service???

With the recent debate over a new tractor purchase, I'm curious who has received excellent customer service on a purchase and who has received very poor customer service on a major item like a tractor? Dave

I used to own a FedEx Home Delivery route in Omaha. You are a contractor, therefore you own your vehicle. I wanted this particular model, 7 tons, diesel, single tires on rear, etc. It was not available for sale, except from a 'dummy' company owned by FedEx. First problem-it came with 2 titles, one from Freightliner for the chassis, one from Morgan Olson for the body. My DMV did not even know how to classify it, and make it one title when I licensed it-he said the bill of sale was 'goofy' too! Then, we had an arranged vehicle wash on Saturdays, wouldn't you know, the dumb thing got wet somewhere it was not supposed to, and it would not shut off. Took it to Freightliner several times until they could figure something out-never was sure what they did, but I just told everyone who washed it to NOT spray into the front wheel wells! Did not have that problem again. Then, the floor was made of several sheets of aluminum and if you would hit a puddle just right, water would spray at high velocity into the cab, hitting the ceiling of the cab. So, called my sales person-they said to make arrangements with someone, and they would send a check. NO ONE would even talk to me about the problem when they heard of that payment arrangement! I finally told her to call and make the arrangements herself-then just let me schedule the appointment. OK, finally got it in to Omaha Standard-BUT, after 3 times in and no relief, they washed their hands of it. SO, I had to sell it that way when I parted ways! Greg

No customer service is why I gave up on dealerships years ago. Everything I buy comes from auctions and dealers are for parts I can't find anywhere else. I was loyal to Co-op tractors and they went Out of Business. Had JD when I got home from the Army in the late 60's the first thing I did was go to the local JD dealer to get clutch plates for a 70 JD and they said they didn't handle parts for 2 cylinder tractors. Got IH tractors, They went out of business when my 1566 was in the shop there. They refused to stand by their own exteneded waranty on the clutch. Sent my 5250 in for some repair and when It came back, it was hemoraging hytran by the gallon. They claimed they didn't know anything about it. I could go on and on. Customer service just doesn't exist any more. I read that post about the new Ford tractor and I thought the guy did just exactly the right thing. Though I wouldn't set foot in that dealership again cause he will regret it. It is like our mail lady. She only stops here 3 times a week. We complained,,,,,,once. When we did, our mail went all over the township and we had to go and pick it up. I was guardian for my Aunt. I went to the post office to get her mail sent to our house. They were at that time running adds about how easy it was to change the address on incoming mail. Our post office flat out refused to change her address! Some things you just have to live with and the current state of Customer Service is one and more are to come. I guess I have gone on and on but this post really hit a nerve. Don't even ask about religion, politics, Farm organizations, or automobile loyalty unless you really want to get me going!

I tend to buy at auctions, and look to dealers as places of last resort for parts.

I feel I am on my own, and no dealer is there to help me, only make money off of me.

Too bad, but seems to be where it is at these days.

JD dealerships in our area 90% owned by one company don't want to talk to you unless you farm thousands of acres. I feel like other brands are about as bad.

It was he!! on earth for me. They would give the neighboring route a day off, and I would have to take half his route-no warning. They were very demanding-since contractor, it was always my problem-no suggestions would come from 'them'. Repair bills were OUTRAGEOUS-$600.00 rear brakes (new pads and turned rotors only-needed to hire it done since the DOT was involved)! Money was not bad, if only I could have done my route each day and not mess with someone elses! Greg

The only bad deal I ever got involved with was on a one ton used truck for our Fire department. Every time I called the price kept changing and when we got there to look at it, the price kept going up. On top of which the lieing SOB's had rigged the rear end in the truck with new bearings but didn't fix the problem... and the rear end went a few weeks later. At our cost. They were so polite to point out that the truck was sold 'AS IS'. Too bad it wasn't an 'AS IS' price.
Otherwise... on any large piece of farm equipment or heavy equipment I've ever bought, service has been good. There were a couple notable exceptions on smaller items not performing up to spec... but adjustments were made.

When I moved out to the country I went to my local JD dealership to buy a tractor. Shortly after that I went to buy a 4 wheeler. Then a snowmobile.

I did not buy any of them there. Nobody wanted to talk to me let alone sell me something.

Customer service appears to be non-existent in any field. One would have thought that the "down-turn" in the economy would have had people fighting to keep business.

I have had swell experiences with the local New Holland dealer (used to be Ford dealer). It is only 1.5 miles from our small farm. I started doing business with the Kubota/New Holland dealer about 30 miles away when I bought an orange tractor. They are very customer oriented as well.

I haven't spent much money at the JD dealer, but do get good service when I take my old riding mower there. Guess I am lucky?

Same here. One Corporation owns a half dozen JD dealerships, and if you aren't ready to write a five digit check, they don't even want to talk to you.

I sent a letter to a bank, at 303 main street
but it came back as undeliverable, due to
incorrect address. The correct address was 305.
But the bank was right across the street from the
post office, they could see it out of their
window. Technically they were correct, but it was
snotty, poor customer service.

Well, I have to say that my nearest IH dealer (almost a 2 hour drive away) has been exceptionally good to me. That said I guess it helps that the family that runs it also collects old IH tractors! Sam

This seems really dumb.. BUT.. I buy a high dollar item I want a cap. Even my part orders add up to hundreds of dollars if not 1000's in some cases. With computers they can keep track of all our purchases on a yearly basis and know how much one spents. At least give me a stupid cap with your logo on it. That's all I want is a cap once in awhile to say we appreciate your business. My J.D. dealer has given me a few caps. Have never had any from N.H. dealer. Not sure I have ever seen a new holland cap..

I appreciate my J.D. Dealer. I can order parts, they deliver to the corner gas station in a drop box where on my way home I can pick them up instead of driving 45 minutes. They then bill me monthly on Farm Plan and I can cut one check for the heap.

Freebies like hats and shirts are extremely hard to get from anyone anymore.

I do tons of business with a particular national manufacturer, many truckloads a year.. If I can squeeze a coffee mug and a few pens out of them I feel lucky.

Well are John Deere dealer has always been helpful and taken the time to help me with all my problems big and small. But they recently have been taken over by another company but theirs still the same people so thats good. The guy who owned this dealer also had a construction dealer next door. They weren't taken over and still run under the same name. My dad says the do excelent service to the loader and the bachoe at his work.
The massey dealer is also very helpful but I havent been in their for a few months so I don't know if its still that way.
Sorry to be long winded.

Wow did i start a conversation or what.
Customer servise is long gone i beleave i had to call New Holland Customer Service they seemed to listen and understand my thoughts or consern but time will tell

Been many many years since I bought a new tractor. Bought a new Deere at that time. The dealer we had then was great, but I can't stress enough how bad the service is from the "chain store" Deere dealers that we have to tolerate anymore. On a scale of 1-10,I'd give them a minus 10. Might as well walk into TSC. I think those arrogant b@stards need to study the history of International Harvestor and the arrogance of their company throughout their history. If they don't,there are going to be so many hard feelings, they'll never recover.

I think the freebie days are over because many people are foolish enough to pay for hats, shirts, sun visors, etc.

Not only are they giving them free advertising, they're actually PAYING THE COMPANY to advertise for them.

I refuse to do it. My Oliver 77 shirt doesn't count, they've been out of business for 35 years.

I am never disappointed when I deal with a truck/ car dealership , I go in there expecting to get the shaft , and they always come throught for me!!!

The best way to get new hats and calanders from them... is to keep wearing the old hat until it's so ratty looking and grease stained that THEY'd like you to stop wearing it. Then they give ya a new one....
I dunno. I always seem to round up a few new ones every year. Never 'paid' for one yet, and like you, I won't.

Are you still cancelling the deal? I think you just got a really poor dealer and/or salesman. Hopefully NH will tune them in? Dave

Indeed, and I hope we hear the ending to this saga of the manual and the stop payment cheque...

I've always had great service at my local Deere dealer. When I replaced the fuel bowl and lines in my B I tried using one of the online places. Took two tries to get the right part, but it still wasn't everything I needed.

Finally, I brought the pieces into the dealer. The parts guy took one look, knew the pipe adapter I needed without me saying a word. He pulled one from behind the counter and didn't even charge me for it.

Must be a regional thing. Around here, they throw a new hat at me every time I buy anything- chain saw, weedeater, you name it. Bought a used tractor at Kubota dealer, got a hat. Never ask for them, I've got more than I can wear already!

Our CIH and JD dealers close by have both been bought out by the regional mega chains in the last 5 years. NH dealer is still run by the same family. I have never had a bad experiance with the NH dealer. Their prices are way too high on some things but that's CNH's fault, not their's. The chain red and green dealers around here loose alot of buisness from right here close by to the small dealers an hour or more away. Some how the little joints are always able to get odd ball parts in quicker and they act like they are glad to sell them to you.

That's the way it is with the Agco dealer that I've gone to dealing with. Family operation in an old wooden storefront building in what's becoming a ghost town. The owner is the salesman and part time mechanic. His wife does the books, son is service manager and daughter in law runs the parts department. No problem with older parts. Go to the Deere dealer and try to get parts for something more than 10 years old and they look at you like you're trying to buy them with food stamps. Nothing but attitude from those pains in the backside.

The post office ruined my mail order book business with their damned address changes.I had many book catalogs come back.I sent a list out to a good customer Texas, came back wrong address.I dug around and found his phone number. He said he lived near the post office, that they knew him well.I got the list to him and got an order for 180 bucks from him.I could not get a list to my customers.Id spend 120 bucks mailing lists and have most come back. The junk mail still fills my box.

OK - not a major item like a tractor, but a minor item like a new zero turn mower. I always thought I would buy a new mower from the local dealer (5 miles from here).

The kid I worked with wanted me to show him how to sharpen his chainsaw. Needed one of those tiny saw files, so we pulled into the mower dealership - he also sold and serviced saws. He took a look at the kids saw and told me "I hate to sell a file to anyone who would butcher up a chain like this one". He thought the saw was mine. The chain WAS in bad shape, but the kid wanted to learn. . .

Anyhow - I bought a $2 file from him and bought a $7000 Grasshopper from a dealer 20 miles away.

I can't understand why dealers don't treat EVERYONE as potential customers. I notice that nearly all of the mowers in the neighborhood of this dealer are NOT sold by him.

Favorite customer service story was at the JD dealership, about 30 years ago. I had bought an old JD H manure spreader, needed to put together a new bottom chain for it. Went in to the dealership, and talked to Herb. Herb was one of those guys whose "forgot more than you'll ever know" about JD stuff. When I told him what I was trying to do, he said, "I think we've got what you need up in the attic". Sent a young lad up there, and he came down with a complete bottom chain for the H- It was marked $83. Would have been 4 times that much, at current prices. Some other parts guys told him "there's probably a price update on that", but Herb said,
"This thing has been sitting in our attic for 25 years, I'm not going to jack the price and lose a sale." Everyone just smiled, as no one had the nerve to cross Herb, and I got my bargain.

I have used the same parts house since I was a kid. I know them, they know me. One day my nephew was having starting problems in the next town near where he lived. I went over and diagnosed it as needing a starter. One of his buddies worked at a big name chain store a few blocks away, so we went there. The starter was a Delco in an old Jeep mail wagon. The buddy came up with 3 different Motorcraft starters (obviously wrong), then stated that he had to order it in. I politely told him that we were in a hurry so we would go to another store I knew.
When we walked in the counter guy said "Tim, what in the world are you working on?". I told him, and held up the old starter. He said "that looks like a XXXX. He didn't even look it up in the book, He just went back, and grabbed one off the shelf. We compared them, It was the right one.
My nephew just stood there with his mouth open.
I told him that you have to find a good place with good help, and keep going there.

You mean "six digit checks".......around here to keep up with the "Jones" means trading multiple new tractors and a combine at the same time. Bankers are giddy to make the loans for it.
