Paint Ideas

Gettin ready to paint a John Deere 830, and was wondering what is the best type of soap to use to clean the tractor to prep for paint, and i was also wondering where i could find the paint codes, i would hate to paint the tractor and find out that its not right so if any of you have a suggestions please just say so,
Thanks

I wouldn t use soap. Wipe it down with lacquer thinner, it doen t leave a film and cleans the metal real good.

If you do not have exposed metal, or at least not a lot, use a citrus based dish detergent. I use Lemon Joy for auto, truck, and motorcycle use. The reason for using this, is that it is able to cut oil and grease a lot better, leaving no film like a lot of the cleaners like "Gunk", and the citrus cuts silicone based products, like "Armorall". I use it when the vehicle first comes in, use it in my water I wet sand with (helps keep the sandpaper from clogging as bad), and then before it is taped and painted. Also, it is not hard on your hands, and if doing a lot of metal repair, and painting, believe it or not, your hands are not that tough... The mechanical work, or changing out of sheet metal will cause them to be rougher, so you don't need the "softness" :) I also use a product from the local "Dollar Store" called Mean Green. It works real good on the grease and oil if the soap doesn't cut it at first. The Mean Green also cleans rubber parts, and leaves them with a finish like they were when new, not all shiney. What ever method, good luck, and enjoy the project.

hi
john deere still has the paint you need and they are cheaper than any aftermarket supplier. trust me i was in the business for 25 years.as far as wipe down it depends on what your wiping. the aged finish will be syn. enamel new primer may be enamel or laq. based depending on what you used. a good way to go is wipe down with dupont 3812s syn. thinner and use it to thin your john deere color the reducer deere sells drys way to slow.also i would use a aftermarket hardener i the color really helps with durability.
any ? just let me know
thanks
john

I would use Dupont's Prep Sol to clean the surface of any wax, grease or dirt. After sanding I would use it again. Hal
