Have heard many use #1 diesel in their tractors during the cold, winter months. To what degree does this help with starting?

Are there fuel additives that are really helpful?

I presently have both Heet and Lucas in my diesel fuel. Was told they are compatible.

It not so much that #1 helps with starting, it's that the #1 doesn't gell up, which would prevent starting AT ALL!

Doesn't really help with starting. The only things that will help a deisel start in the winter are:

A heater of some sort in the coolant.
A manifold heater or glowplugs.
Either- But be very carefull to not use too much!!!!
An engine with god compression
A good battery, good connections, and a fast spinning starter.

The heet and lucas additives will help keep the water out fo the fuel and maybe keep it from gelling, but doesn't do anything for ease of starting. In my mind Heet is kind of a waste of money. Deisel 911 and other addtives do help prevent gelling and help lubricate the injection pump and such.

#2 fuel/kerosene mix works well- 70/30 or 60/40 if its a real cold area usually prevents gelling fuel.

My manuel says to use #1 under 20 deg "NH 1715". it don't say anything about mixing fuel. #1 dont gell in cold weather .
