1020 Deere ignition

I posted this on the Deere board yesterday and didn't get any response,so I'll try it here. What would cause a 1020 gas Deere to only run while the ignition key is in the start position? It quit yesterday and would only run that way til after about a half dozen tries. It quit again later, but restarted and has been OK since. It did that once before, but it's been so long ago,I don't remember what I did to fix it. I'm thinking it must be the switch, but there's a relay or something next to the switch up under the dash. I've changed that in the past, but I don't remember why. When I did get it started the second time,it was with a jumper wire across that thing. Just coincidence? It's run OK since without the jumper wire. I was thinking there was something special about the coil on those too,but don't remember what it was.

No, nothing special about the igntion system.

Sounds like you've either got a bad IGN pole on the key switch, or a bad carbon resistor wire to the coil primary postitive terminal.

1010 is a bit special, but not on the 1020. It uses a carbon resistor wire (like GM cars) to limit voltage to the coil while in "run" position, so maybe you've got a resistor wire problem? Check voltage to the coil primary when running. If it's not 6-8 volts at least, it's time to replace or bypass the wire or replace the switch (or bad connections). A cheap porcelain 1.8 ohm resistor from NAPA will work fine.

just curious how is the 1010 switch "special" my mine is a 1010 Special but I can't find anything that makes it special

1010 has the ignition resistor bypass built into the switch instead of using the bypass on the starter solenoid. That's what makes it "special."

I just ran into something similar on 1520. Turned out to be a bad circuit breaker, what you are calling the relay on the dash. It was only sending 7 volts to the ignition switch instead of the full 12v. Sometimes the tractor started and ran ok, sometimes not. Might be worth a look.
