freezing pipes...

I feel like a real a$$ complaining to some of you folks about 15 degree temps, but that's about as bad as it gets in my area overnight and about 25-30 during the day. I've got to insulate pipes to automatic waterers in the stalls. Is there a rule of thumb or guide somewhere to show how much I need?. I've got 4" PVC that I'm going to split and use to cover the insulation to keep the horses from tearing it up. Any ideas?

Coverin the pipes will help only at 0 degrees C.and then just a for a few hours. A heat tape is needed. Frostex-II It can be cut to any length and capped. Minimal electricity use, and tidy. It is a material with thermistor self regulating controll the colder it gets the more it heats. All along the length it can vary.
Then put closed cell foam on the outside of that (split pipe insulation), then your PVC. Jim

If you could see the look on my face right now :roll:

I've got a 50 meter heat tape in a box never used in the shop along with 50 meters of 1" pvc. Waiting on a rountuit for replacing the whole system going high, out of chewing reach with drops to the drinkers.

I can cut the tape to the link I need now and extend it later????
 
You can't just cut plain-old-ordinary heat tape. Frostex cable is a whole 'nother deal.

The alternative to heat tape is to set your floats so the waterers overflow. Insulation without heat tape doesn't really work.
