Got a car in shop beating me up . MIL on . PO1336,crank relearn code . Code won't clear and I can't get car to complete relearn porceedure . Followed steps on my Modis , Warnmed up ,key off to on , foot on brake , start , accel to 3950 , right so far ? Will not relearn . I have floored it till over rev kicks in , tried 15 times in a row , still no relearn . Crank sensor ? runs good , had bad downstream o2 heater code , replaced o2 sensor, cleared that ok. Any GM techs ? I got no puter access today ,,give me a call 319-329-0915 if you have the magic bullet ! Thanks

I KNOW NOTHING OF YOUR PROBLEM but if it will not do the relearn I would bet you need a new/rebuilt computer for the car.

They won"t relearn if there"s too much variation beyond spec.Worn timing components or reluctor wheel damage or too much CKP sensor air-gap can be a few causes.

We had a GM Tech 1 that wouldn"t re-learn minumum idle speed on 2.8/3.1"s back in the day.The other Tech 1 would.Might want to try a different scanner.

Does your scanner read "test in progress"?

a/c off, engine temp at least 158*, set park brake, scan tool info key off to on,depress brake and hold, acc. to fuel cutoff, hold for two times, release after 2nd cutoff, engine must reached 5150rpm. hope this helps david

No Brad, it does not say " Test in progress " Soemone mentioned codes must be cleared first, but I get the PO1336 code before I even back the scanner out of the screen . I have good waveform, but wondering about amplitude being short . Might try another Crk sensor . If that fails, guy close by has a Tech 2 ,,may give that a shot . I have one on my "To get list " but hard to justify $5000for a dedicated scanner when I get lil of everything in the door .

What did you do to get the P1336? If it just came in with a check engine light on and 1336 is the only DTC, pretty good chance it needs a PCM.
The only time you need to relearn the CKP is if you reprogrammed or replaced the PCM, put in a new CKP, or did anything major like a crank in the engine or complete engine.
You say the pattern is good? Did you tap in to the CKP circ near the PCM? Another thing to think about is the CKP circuit is a twisted pair. Some even have shielding on them to prevent interference.

Hi Brian , car came in for MIL , said it just came on few days ago. But I checked freeze frame and showed it had logged code several thousand miles ago . But ,car did have o2 code , which downstream sensor took care of that . owner says it's his daughters car . I need to drill him some more and find out what has been done to it . I can't clear code , but some say can't relearn till code is erased ?

The 1336 will stay until the PCM is able to successfully do a relearn. Sounds like you're doing the relearn correctly. With engine up to temp and idling, slap it to the floor and release when the rev limiter cuts it out.
Ask if the car has been anywhere to have had the PCM reprogrammed or replaced. If a new CKP had been installed, the PCM would still be using the original learn and would have no idea it had been replaced. For a PCM to generate that DTC out of the blue, that makes a pretty strong case for a faulty PCM.
The down stream O2 DTC would have no effect on the CKP learn.

I thought GM products computer brains were cleared by taking both the positive and negative battery cables loose from the battery and touching them together without battery juice.

HI Bryan Iam a gm tech if the scaner dont say Test in progress I would try the Tech 2 if that
works get with snap on and see whats up with
your scaner.hope this helps. Ross

No ,not that I know of , and why ? Points and cond are pretty old school . Sure , most people can repalce them themselves , but come on . Look at todays cars . You can reach in hit the key on a -20 day and pop right off . Drivability is soo much better than the old days . They cost more to fix ,,but how many problems do you see in 200,000 miles on a car . Old days they were toast by 80-100,000 . Major motor work is almost history . My valve grinder and boring bar havn't seen action in years .

Tech 2 in the morning . Will post results ,,then have a talk with my Snap on dealer and have him explain the wonders of the Modis ! lol
