Diesel glow plugs

Does anyone know where you could buy 12 volt glow plugs with a 7/8 inch by 14 tpi. I think that is about the standard 7/8 inch thread. I once found some that hooked up to diesel fuel. I am looking for ones that will heat the intake air. Thanks.

My tractor takes a plug like that. Real pricey and and nothing to compare to newer plugs. Someone came up with adapters to use modern plugs. Cheaper and quicker. Maybe you could do the same with a plug to fit the hole and drill/tap it to hold a newer plug. Here's what is in my tractor.

The only thing I"m familiar with for air intake heating is Thermostart and that requires fuel to woek. The fuel usually comes from a "T" in the fuel return line to the tank.

Check out Beru's site. They make glow plugs for alot of different equipment. I've looked at their print catalog and I'd just about guarantee you they have it. I discovered them looking for the little chrome covers that go over the resisters that go inline on some glow plug systems. I finally talked to a lady that just sent me two of them free so I've never actually bought from them. In other words I don't know how you'd go about purchasing the plug you need but I'd just about bet they have it.

yes.
the plugs that you describe are the same ones in my ford 951.
after considerable research one rainy afternoon, i discovered that you need to ask for glow plugs for a 1980 volkswagen jetta. they will typically be about $12 each.
they use the same cross reference number as my tractor. i'm not sure at this point what the part number is, but when i find it, i'll post it back here.

are you sure yours are bad?

i was until i saw the inital asking price at a local parts dealer. then i went to the barn with my digital meter in hand and found out it was a bad switch, and not the plugs.

Are you looking for a "glow plug" or a "manifold heater."

Glow plugs are made to screw into precombustion chambers and are used on in-direct injected diesels.

Manifold heaters are mounted somewhere outside the combustion chamber, usually in the air-intake - and are mostly used on direct-injected diesels. Some are the thread size you mention. Some run dry, and some get a fuel line hooked to them. Ford, Case, Allis Chalmers, Massey Ferguson, Perkins, Same, etc. all use them.
Many available new on this Website for $25 - $35 each.

Thanks for all the information, I'll do some more research. Yes, they are actually Manifold heaters , as they heat only the air in the intake manifold. We also have a big one on a 190XT, and a 200 Allis. I think they are at least a 1 inch thread and they pull a lot of current but they make quite a difference when it is around the freezing mark. These 2 tractors start hard when it gets cold unless you have them plugged in. We are looking for these for a 360 cu. in. Ford Dorset Diesel on a TR-70 New Holland combine. Right now it doesn't have any, just plugs in the holes. Again thanks.

i have a international B414 diesel and i am having difficulty with the glow plugs. the indicator gets too hot too quickly and the plugs themselves don"t have time to heat. i have had a mechanic look at it and he has said that everything looks correct.
i would really like to get them going as i have to use ether to start it, which i dislike. if i plug in the block heater for approxiamately 4 hrs it will start, but this isn"t always an option in a hurry!
any ideas are welcome
thanks

Does your GP wire go to one plug and then you have a bridge (??) connecting the rest together, and the indicator is a small coul that you see through a salt shaker looking cap on the dash?

If so, could it be that someone modified it to take normal glowplugs like in the picture I posted above?
If that's the case, that modification was supposed to do away with the bridges, indicator, and maybe the switch (if it worked in conjunction with the starter button.
For mine, I used real heavy gauge wire and a pushbutton (horn) switch.
Ran a wire from + on the battery to the switch. Then, with the same type wire, button to a small junction strip, and from the strip to each individual glow plug doing away with the old wiring.
Then just count to 10 or however long you figure out is good enough to heat up.

Good luck,

Dave
