Farmall 400 widefront problem

IH wide front on my Farmall 400. The woodruff keyslot in the left spindle is worn as is the corresponding keyslot in the steering arm, consequently the steering arm can turn a little each way before the spindle starts turning. What are my options on getting this fixed outside of buying a new spindle and arm?

Assuming you don't have access to a keyway cutter in a machine shop ,How about a dremel tool or die grinder with a small abrasive blade. Just enlarge the slot to the next larger key size. That's how I would have done it .....

Had the same type of problem and I did what others said. I used a bigger key (half moon type)and just filed it down to the right size. I bought the next biggest size key. It was the same shape except that it was thicker. So I only had to file the key down to the required thickness. A better fix would have been to take it to a machine shop and have them enlage the key slots to the next size up, but I have been having a hard time finding a local shop that wants to do little jobs.

Have you tried a new woodruff key? Barring that, a stick or two of 6011 and some judicial grinding to fit.

New key would not be enough I am afraid. I could probably fix the half-moon slot with weld and grinding but that would not work on the keyslot inside the arm. It was suggested I try a product called 'liquid weld' to build up the worn slots. I may try that, if it does not work I will just take the parts to a machine shop and have them machine the slots to a larger key size.

Broach a wider keyway in the arm. Weld the keyway shut in the spindle, then cut a new, wider keyway to match the wider one in the arm. ie, 'Biggin' both of them.
