thanks everyone for the help. I have determined that the remote 4 inch by 8 inch tire rod hyradolic cylinder is leaking internal. I have never rebuilt one. how difficult is it to repair. Evidently the bigh question is cost of rebuild versus a new one. thanks for your input

farm and fleet has the 3.5 x 8 cylinders for about 94 dollars. depends on howe bad the cylinder is inside, it may be easier to just replace the cylinder. heres a link

A couple of years ago I rebuilt a lot of cylinders on a Case rubber tired hoe. A rebuid kit from Case was around 20 dollars for a 4" cylinder. Had to make a tool to unscrew the gland from the tube.

if the rod is straight and not pitted ie the chrome is good, it's mostly just a matter of replacing a whole bunch of o-rings. i did one last summer: took it all apart, brought all the old o-rings to the local mechanic, and he matched them up. the only thing he didn't have on the shelf was the felt wiper where the rod goes into the cylinder, but we made something work.

Any way to post a picture of the cyl? There are a couple different designs, some are a lot easier than others to get apart.

Helps if you can find a name on it/ identify it, to get the parts you need.

I had a cyclinder that had an internal leak. The chrome on the cyclinder sidewall was peeling off on the upper end of the cyclinder. Check the condition of all the parts before buying any parts.

The last cyclinder I took apart was ok inside and so I replaced the o-rings and welded the top back on. It will most likely not be rebuilt again. But I wasn't going to buy new hardware to hold it together with, because we did not know what type it was. Cheap cyclinder that had been on a manure spreader.
