carburetor flooding

We took the carburetor off and the gasket between the two halves of the carb was torn in two places. Could this make the carb flood? Checked to the spark plugs and they are firing.

Bet you tore the gasket when you opened up that carb. Flooding is caused by dirt in the needle seat, a sticking or bad float or a loose needle seat. Either way you need to buy a GOOD carb kit and install it AFTER you soak the carb in carb cleaner for 24 hours then blow it out with air

Is your float metal? Can you hear anything sloshing around in your float? There is really not much to them, the float operates like the float in your toilet, when the fuel level rises, the float rises, and pushed the needle and seat closed. They need to be adjusted, and will leak if the needle and seat leak by.
Please post pictures if you can.

Plastic floats will absorb gas.You have weigh the suspect float or compare it to a new one.I have found a lot of brass floates with gas in them. You can collapse a float with compressed air.

Hey guys, thanks so much for your guidance. I took the carb to a Farmall dealer and had a long lesson on the floats, packing, etc. I learned that if you don't bend the tab down on the floats on the hinge that the floats will drop too far and the needle will fall down and prevent the floats from working. Also discovered that the packing my husband put in the air/mixture needle valve from the carb rebuilding kit was not there! Bought the correct packing and followed the tech's instructions to the letter. We put the carb on this afternoon and it took a while to start and when IT DID...LOOK OUT BABY! Thanks so much for your support guys! You're awesome!
