Poor forage quality plagues Missouri O/T

Interesting write up in the 12/5/09 page 41. www.lowafarmertoday.com on hay quality less this year than last years which was not good. Starts off with the cow is starving with a full belly. All spins around the delay in harvest of the crop due to weather.

I could not bring the article up, I would really like to read it..Their was so much hay put up wet and rained on this year it was a shame. Although their is a lot of hay I would say 85% is not fit to feed.

Our growing seasons vary so much here (Western NY) from year to year that feed quality does also. Cold overcast weather such as we had this year will definitely lower nutritional value. Most progressive livestock producers (dairy included) will have samples of their forage sent in for analysis to know what to supplement their forage with. This issue not only exists with hay but corn harvested as silage. With margins as tight as they are you have to develope a complete nutrition plan and not chance whether your forage is or is not good enough.

I know poor forage doesn't make healthy cows and reduces calf crop however, if they starved to death from it 75% of the cattle in central Missouri would already be dead. Thats every year.
Most good hay here is reserved for horses which are a burden not an asset. That is however were the money is at.
