OT: Pearl Harbor Day

Ironically, the Japanese would not have considered attacking Pearl Harbor had it not been for the world's acceptance of the treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese war. Theodore Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace prize for his part in negotiating that treaty. 35 years later it would be another President Roosevelt that would see the results of letting Japan run roughshod over the Pacific.

My uncle was there. USS California. Swam to shore, realized he'd left a brand-new carton of smokes in his bunk. Went back and got them. He always had good stories.

Thanks James Interesting Pictures that only can be described by those that were there, only they can know of a nice day turning into H$ll in a couple minutes and redirect history. We are proud and thank those for their sacrifices

I think it might have been the fact that the japanese defeated the russkies pretty good. They could afford to be gracious in victory. I believe they got a couple of islands and free reign in Mongolia later.

(quoted from post at 11:28:06 12/07/09) At least the second Roosevelt declared War on Japan and not Iraq.

Searched long and hard for that response huh???

Yes dave that about sums up what happened that day. My grandfather was there and always told me. It was amazing how many warning signs were ignored that day.He also gave me a picture of the USS Phoenix CL-46 underway during the attack.

I had a granduncle, a marine, who was a pearl survivor and he also fought in the main pacific war. I now have his 1903 Springfield 30-06 that was with him that day and till the end of the war. The rifle has a history behind it, he got a engine shot on a Japanes plane and brought it down and in the main war, as he called it, he used it for snipping and he shot several Japanes officers, 3 majors and 1 general. All were confirmed kills as well as many combat kills.
Alex
(P.S.) He didn't remember much of the pearl attack but he did say it was living HE!!.

Thanks for the reminder James.
If anyone is interested in reading more about the Pacific war here is a good place to start.

I was 6 years whe the war started, but remember radio broadcast about it and shortwave broadcast from england,Mostly I remember watching c47 twin engined planes flying over pulling a couple of gliders headed north and later seeing the gliders going back to air field at Lubbock tx.,where they had a glider school, and now have a glider museum. Got any more war storries

My dad served on the USS Enterprise and was on board that day. Fortunately, they were out on excercise and not docked in the harbor.

Speaking of a sneak attack!

After Dec. 7, 1941 why does anyone buy a Japanese product. The Americans have the shortest memories of anyone on the planet. Buying a Japanese product is saying Thank You for Dec. 7, 1941.

After Hiroshima, surprised the Japanese by any of our stuff

Life goes on.

Dave

read once that if we would have had the fighters gassed and armed and all of the AA guns ready it would have been a Japenese defeat, they fully expected to lose 1/2 of their carriers.Hiroshima doesn't bother me when I read about what they did to our prisoners and those of our allies in Singapore, the Phillipines (Baataan death march) ect. On the other hand I see them as a friend in the east and I kind of like my Yamaha motorcycle. We shouldn't ever forget but should try to forgive, I am sure for some that will never be possible and is up to them to deal with that in their own way.

yeah the poor grammar, spelling and the same stupid punctuation from zeke/tree farm posts kinda gives it away. Guess we got poofed calling the freak out before James. Still, it's sad for a 70 something "person" (term used lightly) to act this way. He (or it) has to be mentally challenged. Perhaps at the group home they have different computers he can change his IP address from.

NOTE: I typed up the whole message, and sent it in, but you red-flagged it, and sent it back. then you said to check it, so i did. And now, you have deleted it! What gives?
If thats how you treat the messenger--well--what should i have done?

He bought it after the war was over. The military was getting rid of the model 1903 bolt action Springfield, so he bought his old rifle. Thats how I got it.

Gee Dave, any thoughts on Dresden ? Far more allies died fighting the Germans than the Japanese, and you more or less became a
German:role:

You can't help being a Moron, but you should hide it a little better. Not becoming at all.........

I recently received a DVD copy of the TV series "The World at War."
I highly reccommend a copy for anyone who wishes to look at all the male bovine excretment that led up to the War. Near the end it contains an interview with James Ambrose who gave some good thoughts on the winners and losers and the deals that were struck.
