It might help all of us to relax and reflect about those dogs. Times are kinda stressful these days so I bet if you will talk about that better than one deserves dog that came your way, folks would injoy it. I think I may have something in my eye right now so I will tell you about Ricky after hearing from you.

How ironic you bring this up. I just lost my dog a month ago. Wondered out to US hy. 14. Didn't have a chance with all the traffic on that road. Kinda mysterious too as he never wandered off the place before. I suspect he got on the trail of a cyote I had on the run in the corn field the nite before. Any way he was a good dog but not my best. Best was an Irish setter I had maybe 25 years ago. Wife use to let him in the front mud room of the house when she and the girls were home alone. Very protective of the little girls. He always recognised the sound of my pickup when I came home but one afternoon I sopped down by the shed for something and then walked up to the house. Not thinking about the dog I just walked right into the house and when that dog heard the door open he lunged right for my throat. Before he bit me he recognized it was me and just fell on a heep at my feet. If it had been anyone else I pitty the out come of that poor sole. What a dog.

The wife and I have two dogs a beagle about 8 to 9 years old just a good dog Then we have a blue heeler named bailey she is just two years old but knows what the world of cattle is all about. She is better then any hired man I have ever had . Enough said

A good dog can not be replaced by anything I have found. They are truly your best friend and will stand beside you threw thick and thin to death do us part. Nothing else; not even most peoples spouse can match that.

If you don't believe it, just try this experiment.
Put your dog and your spouse in the trunk of the car for an hour.

When you open the trunk, which one is really happy to see you?

We lost our dog (Lab/Shepard cross) a few years ago and were very hesitant about replacing him because we were afraid of getting one that did not match up to him.
We finally got a new dog (Catahoula/Pit-bull cross) and while these first few months have been trying he seems to be turning into a great dog.

I've only really had one dog(she is amazing!), but let me just say that canines are such amazing cratures. So loyal, when you hollar at 'em for misbehavin they always come back to ya to make sure everything is OK.

My girl(boxer/shepard mix) will follow me on the tractor untill she's completely exhausted, whether i'm tillin, hayin, or harvestin, she's only a few steps behind.

We were at Smokey's truckstop in Kanona, NY, gettin dinner, and she was on a leash tied in the back of my truck(with a cap that was locked). We were sittin down for about 20 minutes when through the doors walks my dog!! She got worried and broke her heavy duty nylon leash, busted the back window on the truck, and tracked our scent all the way into the restaraunt and sat down next to our table. Everybody loved it!! She has many more stories, but i digress.......

When God created the perfect animal, no name was fitting, except God spelled backwards....Dog

My dog was hit by a car two months ago. She was up and walking that night. But it took her about 10 more days before she got back up on her hind legs again. I kept going back and forth about whether I should have dug a hole for her. Every time she saw me she was so happy that I would always give her another day. Usually meets me in the garage when I come home from work. Tail wags the dog. I hope I did the right thing for her.

Sorry to to hear you lost your dog Belgian. About that Setter. They have been bred for thier beauty to the extent it is getting difficult to find a good using one. And man! What a price they demand. Anyhow,I can't emagine how my family could have survived without Ricky. He was mixed blood including a touch of pit, black with white on his forehead and two feet, waighing about 40LBS of which was 10LBS heart & 30LBS fight. Our farm was surounded by large farms that depended on mirgrant labor,so theft was a realalty, chickens, corn(yep you could take either into town and sell on the spot)scrap metal or anything that converted to cash or could be eat. We lost nothing, thanks to Ricky and my brother's 12guage. Cow you needed penned?Call Ricky. Want to rustle up a couple squirrels for supper?Don't bother calling, when he saw the 12guage he was off to the timber. If we were fur hunting and he treed a squirrel or chased a rabbit, scold once and not again that day. I could go on and on but I must give him credit for undouptly preventing all us from snake bite since we had Copperhead,Cotton mouth and two type Rattlers but he managed to find them before we did. Talk about taking a bullet for us,he would wade in in kill them and got bite himself a few times. Head would swell up and he would crawl under the house and barf up a few days and back on the job. Never crossed anyones mind to take him to the vet(I am ashamed).

I never fully trust a man that doesn't like dogs.

Folks think I'm kidding when I repeat the old saw about "The more people I meet, the better I like my dog" but none of my dogs has ever lied to me, talked about me behind my back or tried to cheat me.

I'm getting old enough that losing a dog hurts a little more every time. My current "pup" will be 12 in January and tore a ligament in her back leg this summer. Getting some weight off her has helped a lot, but it's much harder for her to get around now.

Hardest thing in the world to do is decide where the line is between caring for your dog and torturing it by keeping it alive past it's time because you can't let go.

My wife has trained(obedience)bred,showed,groomed,4-5 diff breeds for the last 30 years.Titled many in the ring in obedience and confirmation.Even people that do this for a living wait a lifetime for that one special dog.Well she had one,a rottweiler named Stoker.I been around most of these dogs over the years and he was the one. When he was around two, took him in for hip xrays, vet let assistant give anestesia, sure enough ODed him.Wife wasnt the same for years.Still had some great ones over the years and still do.Took my wifes ambition right out of the dog world though, after that.

My favorite quote is

I hope I can be half the man my dog thinks I am!

I agree with the previous post if someone doesnt like dogs I will not trust them my best friend is a chow lab cross and [i m h o] is the best dog ever he is 9 now and i can trust him totaly he wont take food unless it is in the dish or handed to him if i put snack on a chair or somrthing he will sit there snd look at it untill I hand it to him and he is alwayse glad to see me

i lost mine about 3 months ago he was a little chihuhauha (probably didnt spell that right)we got him from a rescue place had him about 2 years he was withdrawn when we got him but took to me right away.i was the only one who could pick him up growled at everyone else.i had a milk crate mounted on the tractor fender where he just loved to ride.but unfortunetly he lost movement of both hind leggs.one minuet he was fine the next he was dragging both leggs happened that quick.took him to the best vets in columbus ohio where they determined he had permanent damage so we put him down.took me a couple weeks to get over that one.even tough trying to type this without choking up.we buried him out by the barn under a oak tree with his own little cross.but life goes on and i now have another one named derby who sleeps up next to me all night long and is setting on my lap right now.dogs are great. RICK

A good dog is a good dog no matter what the breed. We had a Lab for 14 years that protected all of us. There was never any doubt she would die defending any one of us. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for another. We had to have her put down a few years ago. We still miss her.

We could make a sandwich and leave it on rthe coffee table and go to the store and find it untouched when we arrived back home. She let the kids fall on her when they first started to walk and made a great backrest when the watched TV. She loved to retreive, and she whined and whimpered with excitement any time you drove past a lake.

I have three beagles and an English setter that I love dearly, but they're not like Molly was. If I try to take them for a walk off-leash all they want to do is hunt. Molly just liked to be along for fun.

We just recently lost two of the best dogs we had, our first one was a german shepard, maggy, she was the best dog, she truly was my best friend very protective dog loved water mom would buy her a plastic pool and she would swim for hours but one night the neighbors bull mastiff and three rotwielers got out and ganged up on her and killed her, then some idiot one night shot my austraillan shepard that i had for the past 14 years, she was standing in the front yard and somebody put a slug in her, very very hard times this happend with five months of eachother

I had a Basset named Charlie. I cut this poem out of a newspaper many years ago. It's by Alice E. Chase. Well worth the read. "To Charlie With Love" He's never won a ribbon and you'll never see his name, recorded in the annals Of the canine hall of fame. He hasn't any papers To show his family tree Charlie has to make it Without a pedigree But unlike lots of people Always trying to impress This lack of status symbol Coulkn't bother Charlie less With wagging tail and joyous bark he takes such things in stride, He knows whatg really matters Is what you're like inside And underneath that shaggy coat His heart beats strong and true He's full of love and loyalty What's more--he proves it too He's gentle and he's mannerly And he's made friends galore But stands his guard if strangers Come knocking at the door He's ecstatic when we give him A kindly word or pat He's wonderful with children, Even patient with the cat. No, he's never won a ribbon But of all the dogs we know Within our family circle Charlie places best in show. I know it's kinda long but I hope you enjoyed it. rw

I met a great woman 5 years ago, along with her was "Sammy" a black lab / rotweiler mix. I was told the stories of where he was found for free on a lawn in a box, slept on a shelf, and needed to be carried up and down the stairs as a puppy. During our years together since, he would also sleep in our bed, lay on the newspaper on the kitchen table (may not be correct), but we allowed it. He would let anyone play with him, insisted on a leash to go outside, and was a lab that did not like water. When he got ill, and had to be put down, I buried him in the back yard with a head stone. To this day "Deb" wont go near the site. I still keep it mowed, and when his picture turns up in an album, I know the tears will flow.
Love you Sam

Here is my similar Story ,, Met a Italian girl in 04, Married her in 05 , What a gem , ! .. anyway ,, Her son , rescued a dog on a wet cold DECEMBER morning on the way to school about 5 yrs ago . The juvinile Heinze 57 predominant Golden Retrievor had just gotten run over by a car ahead of him , Micah scooped up the injured December and handed her off to the friendly vet ,, Vet told Him the dogs injuries would cost several hundred , and it might be best to put her to sleep since it was obviously a STRAY judging from its half starved state ,, NUTHIN DOING, it will Be my Dog then! MICAH claimed ,,when , MICAH went east to college , we got to keep DECEMBER , I Have Had many GOOD DOGS in my time , Never have I seen a more LOVELY disposition in animal , She seems to have copied and emulated My wifes Personality and Intuition ..., I have had serveral good dogs but none were like this DECEMBER . No bad habits , NEVER has created a mess ( she comes in the house at nite during winter monthes ) Great with children , And good with letting Us know when someone has pulled in the lane , Handles cattle fine and Minds if I call her down ,, She has a Radar ALERT for the sound of the Cherokee my Wife drives doesnt Matter If she comes from any of 3 directions , If You Watch DECEMBER closely , One can always tell 3 minutes before Sara pulls in the drive ....And that JEEP is not loud!... We Truly FEEL BLESSED To have her for Our evening guest in front of the fireplace.......
