cheap flourescent lights

I have around 20 of the cheap $9 flourescent lights. Around half work, the other half are toast.

I know the ballasts cost more than a new light. Any uses for these things, or send them to scrap?

I was going to salvage a few of the plastic sockets as spares.

I know, I know, don't buy the cheap junk. I got what I paid for.

Thanks,
Rick

sounds like you got the rite plan saving sockets...i got one of the "sunlight" type fixtures i'm gonna hook up some day...see if it works any better in cold damp weather...i dont think the expensive fixtures are gonna hold up any better.

When we had power run to the shop and lights installed, we used very expensive high output 8 ft fluorescent lights. While they do work in cold weather, I've noticed they are not very bright and it doesn't get nearly as cold here as it does for some of ya'll.

I have one that will light at zero degrees.Box it came in says it will.I have been out there when its zero and it does work.Another fixture gets screwy around 20 degrees so I unplug it and use a good 200 watt Edison lamp.

I"ll probably use the ones that work in the basement.

There are a few like 36 coupe said will light at zero in the winter, and others that struggle to fire at 50 or 60.

Before you scrap them, bend the prongs on plugs very wide. Some are steel instead of copper or brass and have no give. Fixed a few like this from starts with W mart.
