How to adjust air compressor on an International 4400

I spent to good part of the night trying to search on Google with no luck. I am trying to figure out how to adjust the compressor cut-off on an International 4000 truck with a DT 466. Right now it cuts out at 135 psi whereas I know it should be 120PSI. Seems to be creeping up over time and would like to figure out how to adjust it before trouble arises.

Hello ChrisB,
To adjust the air governor is easy.It is located very close to the compressor. It has a black cap, plastic or rubber. You take it off and you will see a screw and a jam nut. To reduce the pressure at which the compressor stops pimping, you need to loosen the jam nut turn the screw counteclock wise. try a full turn and see if lowers the cutoff pressure.
If turning the scrwe has no effect, then you may have to replace the governor. Let me know if you need more help.
Good Luck..........Guido.

A new air brake compressor governor is $15 to $20.

If the pressure is "creeping up", for gosh sakes, REPLACE the governor!

Cost at ONE source...

Is there an internal adjustment like that on my little ol 10 gallon 5 cf air compressor? Mine has an adjustment knob which I have turned all the way but it doesn't kick in quick enough when running a nail gun. Sometimes when it leaves a nail head up, I have to go over and manual pull on the popoff valve until the compressor kicks back on. I prefer it to kick in after only a 10 psi loss instead of the 35 or so it does now. I might see if I can take the knob off and get more adjustment out of it.

Yes, replace that governor, it's cheap.

Years ago I remember a report on the local news about a truck driver that was killed when the air tank under the truck cab exploded.
This was during a winter storn, so ice may have been a big factor. bottom line is that the compressor governor did not shut off and the "pop off" valve at the tank did not open.

Replace the governor and inspect / test pop off/ pressure relief valves.
You dont need to die because of a stupid double air system failure, especially when the parts are so cheap.

The truck air brake compressor and your portable air compressor are two different "animals".

PLEASE don't mess with the pressure settings unless you are SURE of what you are doing!

However, if it's an American-made pressure switch, you can possibly find the manufacturer's website and download instructions on how to set the "differential"

On cheap stuff, though, often the differential is "fixed" (non-adjustable).

Jon,

Is that the incident I remember, probably in '74 or '75, down on the Interstate in the Bismark area?

Bob, I have always wondered if that might have been one of those old trucks with an air starter and the big 30 gallon ? air tank.

There isn't much inside of a governor like that but a couple of O-rings and as they age they leak and often have also worn away at the cylinders they ride in so when they start to leak there really isn't any way to make it work right again. So, as others have said if the pressure is creeping up then replace the governor. It's cheap insurance when your talking about your brakes. It only takes two bolts to take it off but make 100% sure you mark where the lines go and put them back in the same place. If you don't then you could damage both the compressor and the tank by allowing everything to overpressurize. Too remember when you put it back on to make sure the old gasket is removed (if it is bolted straight to the compressor head) and use a new one. Too don't overtighten the bolts or you will crack the aluminium housing... Been there, done that once or twice myself over the years and that's when I already knew better..

Thanks all. Decision has been made to replace to governor. I think the creeping part is definitely a bad sign. Did not know the governor was that cheap and so little involved. Out of service it is and in it goes tomorrow.

To the one stating dangerous. Most CDL drivers do not know how to set piston ring gap, nor set the side lash on an axle, but guess what, they still have a CDL and are safe. You must not know air brakes as they pertain to CDL licenses.

Make sure to relieve the air pressure in the tanks or you will get a surpridsehen disconnecting the pressure sense line from the governor!

Hey GUIDO :!:,
do you think you can write down the exact procedures in adjusting the governor, like from checking the cut-in and cut-out pressures and how to set them at a particular pressure, i need it today. if you can that would be great!! :D
