OT: Dishwasher Fog

I'm getting pressure to do something about foggy glassware coming out of the dishwasher. I recently switched from Potassium chloride to salt since the potassium is now 4 times the price of salt. And since the switch, fogging has really increased ( fogging used to be minimal).
So what causes this to happen? Is it a film or some reaction occuring inside the glass? I remember back in the 70's being warned to never place good crystal inside a dishwasher for this very reason, fogging.

Has anyone tried an acid bath (Carb cleaner) or a caustic solution with any luck in removing the fog?
We've added the Jet-Dry type products to the door dispenser with very little results. I know it is supposed to be a preventative, but not that good in my opinion.

Any ideas?
Thanks

If you run out of jet dry, it can take several washes to get the glasses clean again. Also do you have you water softener set properly. You may need to test to see if it is a) working and b) reconditioning the water to the correct level. If it is an older type water softener you may save on salt if you replace it with a newer one.

Doug,Making dishwahers work properly is what I have done for the last 35 years. By fog are you referring to a fog of tiny water droplets all over the inside of the glass when they first come out or are you referring to the appearance when dry?

we run a product called CLR (calcium, lime, and rust I think) to clean our dishwasher from time to time. Second make sure your water softener is functioning properly and next switch to the cascade soap packets. you will find that the film obn glasses will stay a while so be patient. good luck

I had some glasses that were getting bad. I really didn't know what was doing it. I am on town water. Then someone said to use a product called "Lemi Shine". According to the directions you fill one compartment with Lemi Shine and the other with regular dishwasher detergent. I actually use a teaspoon in each compartment and it keeps things clean and shiney. It does take a few washings to get everything back to normal. I thought I was going to have to throw some of the glasses away but they cleaned up like new.

A tablespoon of acid detergent/rinse such as dairymen use to clean glasss milk lines added to the was cycle will clean things up nicely.

We use jet dry all the time and if we run out we can see it right away. The brand of detergent you use can make a difference too. It depends a lot on your water.

Doug, Then your problem could very well be hardness film as other posts are referring to or it could be soil build-up due to inadequate washing. if the film is mineral it will be removed easily by a dip in vinegar solution. For the sake of testing make a fairly strong vinegar water solution of very hot water and vinegar at about one cup vinegar to a cup of water. Immerse a few glasses for about 1 min then rinse in HOT water and let them air dry. if the film is gone when dry it is mineral film, and you need to get your softener serviced. If it is using the salt it has to be working but your water may have gotten harder with time and the time between regenerations may need to be shortened. post back with results of this test and I can give you some other things to check.

Where do you get parts for a 58yr old dishwasher? The outside still looks great but some of the innards aren't working so well.lol gobble
