Gasoline in a Powerstroke

How much gasoline will a Ford Powerstroke tolerate? This morn I was at the convenience store gassing up when my neighbor pulled up on the other side of the pumps with his mid 90's powerstroke and started filling up. These pumps have a gasoline hose on one side and a green diesel hose on the other side. I sauntered over to talk to him and noticed he had the gas hose in the pickup. By the time I had alerted him of his mistake he had 5 gallons of gas in the front tank. He shut it off and topped the tank with diesel.

How much does the front tank hold in those pickups? I'm thinking he might have 20% gasoline in there. Jim

NONE! do not start the truck, tow it home and drain the fuel tank, flush with diesel and refill with diesel

i am basing this on 2 examples i have personaly seen, one a ford 6.9 the other a chevy when gas was accidently introduced into the fuel both trucks suffered major engine damage, and cost thousands to repair, i have heard stories of using gasoline to prevent diesel from gelling, BUT i have never run into anybody who actually did it

Well, eric, this guy's an old farmer so I couldn't convince him otherwise. He drove away with a polluted front tank pulling two empty wagons. A little while later I saw him headed to town with two full wagons. It could be he switched to the back tank. The front one had the gasoline. Jim

The old IHC/Mercedes manuals noted 10% unleaded gas acceptable for winter use. The GM distributive pump on the 1970s Olds car diesels was particularly vurnerable to gas so recommendation was NONE. The newest injector pumps and common rail/electric triggered systems are not meant for any gas mix- the earlier Bosch/Mercedes/Daimler design still used in some engines is OK, they have engine oil lubrication for pump, is same basic design they used for gasoline engines and injectors are not using large seals suseptable to gasoline. Safest way is suck out all fuel from tank, drain if you have a drain plug and refill with fresh. A emergency use only, warrantee voiding, get out of the danger area trick is to add 2 stroke oil or 30 weight non-degergent low ash oil to gas contaminated fuel. RN.

He should use his other tank and drain the tank with gas in it. I was a gas station and someone had filled up their fancy brand new diesel pusher motorhome with gas! I heard someone inside(on a phone) swearing that it shouldn't even be started. I stopped at the same gas station the next day and asked the owner what happened with the motorhome. He said they just poured a whole bunch of conditioner in it and it was fine. I wonder how long it was fine for? I sure wouldn't take any chances, especially in a $150,000+ vehicle. I prefer the diesel pump to be completely seperate from the gas pump so it's impossible to accidentally fill up with gas. Dave

I messed up on my 2000 Powerstroke back 4 or 5 years ago with about 4-1/2 gallons of gas before I caught it.Probably had 5 or 6 gallon of diesel in the truck when I got there.I put in another 20 gallons of diesel and chanced it,didnt have any choice at that point. No adverse effects that I can tell.As a matter of fact I thought it ran pretty good

I put about 3 gallon or so as a guess of gas in my ford disel truck after filling a coupla gas cans. NO idea why is stuck the gas nozzle in the diesel truck while I was while I was putting the caps on the gas cans. But I did. The owner of the bulk station as well of this gas station told me as long as I was under half gas to not to worry about it. He said it happens quite often with his diesel and gas pumps side by side. I didn"t notice an difference in sound. After I was down a quarter of a tank I did refill with diesel to thin out the gas more.

A couple years ago my neighbor drove his new duramax diesel 3/4 ton to the case IH dealer for some parts. He was in a huury left his keys in the truck and ran in for his parts. When he came out his truck was gone.About 30 minuites later an old man came driving it back to the dealership. The old man was on a parts run for his son, came out of the dealership and got in the wrong truck and took off.He said he was sorry and stopped to fill the tank.He put gas in it and drove probably 1/2 mile to the dealership.
They had to have the truck towed and the tank removed and drained. It cost over 400 bucks to fix. There still fighting over the bill.

I don't think he has anything to worry about. The gas is going to mix with the diesel. You will not have pure gas going into the system. I would drive it and add some more diesel to it. I put six gallons in my Dodge service truck. Then topped off the rest with diesel never had any problems.

One day I was getting gas, a Guy next to me was filling a FedEX truck with gas, he was black, I made talk with him about the nice day and he told me that he was enjoying the day, and thinking about his girl so much he realized the diesel was awful high in octane.. He filled it with gasoline. He called his boss and was told not to start the truck, they towed it to the shop and drained the tank?? Now my uncle told me he had a VW Rabbit diesel in the 80s and he would put a gasoline/diesel blend in it in for the winter! J

used to add a touch of gas to my vw diesel pickup.. it was supposed to help the jelling in winter.

quit doing it as it ran very bad and had no power. instead of 40 mpg it got about 22 mpg... so I quit doing it and relied on #1 diesel for winter use.

I have a 2001 dodge with a cummins it has 340,000+ miles on it and I run up to 20% gas in it all winter long for antigel purposes. It seems to run a little better with the gas in the tank. I have had 3 other diesels and i have done the gas trick to all of them and never had any problems of any kind.

Don't know about gas in a diesel but I filled my Honda Goldwing up once with diesel and it didn't run50 feet. Took all day to get it runmning right. Bernie Steffen

Daughter borrowed my diesel station wagon years ago when I had one of them. She filled it up with gasoline. Ran like c__p. Kept adding diesel at every opportunity, until I had gas diluted back to deisel. No ill effects. Got tired of stalling at every stop however.

Adding gasoline to diesel "to prevent gelling" is not a good idea. All of the parts of the diesel fuel system rely on the fuel to lubricate the moving parts. How much lubricity does gasoline have?

taking one heck of a risk ,, I dread the Thoughtless nite mare , happened to our good neighbor during a overworked harvest season , Ruined a good engine , Get that stuff out of there and use it for cleaning fluid ,. as others have said that a 5% mixture is OK in extreme Cold ,, I have a Yanmar (asian trash ) that was so dam hard to start I did mix some gas with Diesel to make it fire ,some of the rings ended up in the oilpan , Still in the DEAD ROW waiting for someone to luv it enuff to fix it and put a sleeve set in it ,, The head will get a Thourogh going Over as well ,,

No, the GM 5.7 diesel was designed as a diesel. It did have a few design features from other Oldsmobile gas engines which contributed to it being a crappy diesel engine.

Actually Yanmar are rated as one of the best small diesels available. Good enough to put the JD name on their tractors. Dave

" a few design features from other Oldsmobile gas engines"
Which means that the basic foundation for it was the gasoline engine. Yes, it had some mods & beefing up, but the platform/foundation was the gas engine. It was NOT a diesel designed on a clean sheet of paper. It didn't take much to back convert one to a gas engine. The bottom line is history: a failure.

Put a gal of 30w motor in it also and that should mix with the gas as well to lubericate and it should be ok. This has happened lots of times and they recommend if there is up to 20% gas in 20 gal of diesel , add one gal of 30w motor oil and do not pull a load or over rev the motor at a high rpm untill the fuel is burned out.
