hydraulics 8n

I have a Ford 8n (1950 ish side mount distributor). It runs great (after sitting for 20+ years), but the hydraulics don"t work. I took the side cover off and the pump seems to be moving. I looked and felt (carefully) for any leaks and can"t seem to find any. Any advice before I pull the whole hydro unit out to inspect. Any advice is appreciated.

Do you have the PTO in gear and the clutch pedal up???? Only way the hyds work on the N series is to have both those things. If you answer yes then which side cover do you have off?? You need to have the right side one off and watch for any movement of fluid. If you see fluid moving then that is the area that has the problem. By the way if you ask this in the N forum you will get a lot more answer

take a blow gun and blow air pressure into dip stick tube, it has lost its prime. Do this while its running p.t.o. engauged and lever in lift position.

On the N series there is no way it can lose its prime since the pump sits right in the oil so only way it could lose prime is if it has no oil

Thanks for the tips. The right side cover is off and the PTO and clutch are engaged. The only fluid movement I see is from the PTO spinning and the pump moving.

If the fluid level is as it should be you will not see much if any movement from the PTO or pump and to me that says you have either the relief valve bad or the pump gaskets blown. I have seen both and had that on my 1951 8N this past summer
