harbor freight

Shame on you "very poor quality tools". Do they really sell anything good ?

We have a Harbor Freight not far from here and i stop in from time to time. I even tried there cut off wheels thinking they would be ok. "Wrong" they don't last and come apart...

Complaining about the quality and service of Harbor Freight is a bit like complaining about the steaks at Burger King. You get what you pay for.

I feel your pain, dont know what you bought but I have had very poor luck with electrical items from HF. However items marked "professional" (air tools, wrenches, sockets) I've had good luck with.

Harbor Freight in improving but you have to be selective in what you get and not expect too much. Power tools I would consider throwaways. A lot of the hand tools are made in Taiwan rather than China and seem to be pretty good. I got one of the 3/8 drive swivel ratchets and gave it to a professional mechanic who is doing some work for me to see how it holds up. I'll post on here when/if it tears up.

I've been buying from them for close to 30 years. I've gotten lots of good equipment along with bad. Like just about anywhere, you have to pick and choose. Did you expect 100% superior quality at such low prices?

I'll add that they've given me great service. Any time I've had a problem, they took care of it right away. In fact, last year I bought a solar panel for close to $200. It arrived with broken glass (probaby thanks to UPS). HF told me to keep it, no charge. It works fine and I still use it.

In our shop at a Deere dealership, we got sick of buying high-end metal grinders from Metalbo, Sioux. Makita, and Miluakee and tried some yellow "Chicago Pnematic" from Harbor Freight. Half the cost and they held up just as well. I still have two of them I bought in 1981 and use them almost every day.

I bought some good looking drill bits from them. They would drill good for about 30 seconds then dull.I put one in a vise and bent it over 90 degrees with a hammer.

I enjoy snooping around. Where else can you buy a twenty foot 5/16 tie down chain for $20.

I just bought a bunch of furniture dollies and made mobile platforms for the heavy stuff like the Meteor snowblower. 12 x 18" with 360 swivel wheels. Just screwed three of them under some 3/4 plywood trimmed to size. You can't buy two of the wheels for the $8.00 I paid each.

The stuff does the job even if it doesn't last forever. How often does the average guy need a pipe wrench? I'd rather pay a few bucks and have it hanging on the wall for that occasion.

I admit I bought from them probably thirty years ago when it was mail order only. the free shipping back then was a big deal and the prices were incredible........... but now that they have retail stores all over the place .... it's still fun to look. You won't find another store with so much "junk" packed between the walls ........ almost like a garage sale.

they are great for buying one time tools.. every now and then I need a special tool for breaking down a tractor or some project. I dont expect the the tool to last very long for the little bit of money I paid for it. but these cheap tools have saved me thousands of dollars over professional tools that I dont need or want to keep for a one time job.

Harbor Freight is just like walmart.. They do a great job providing low end consumer goods..

I dont go to walmart to buy diamonds, I dont go to a whorehouse to find religion, but walmart does sell their diesel oil cheaper than anyone else,, and their low end fram filters as well.. but then again, you get what you pay for..

The china made tools are great for you help to use, if they loose them, or break them who cares, its not like loosieng a good expensive tool.

Not top quality is correct, but where can you buy a 4 inch angle grinder for under 10.00, or a air die grinder for under 8.00. I buy my tractor tool box tools from there. I wish I had done that before I lost my full tool box of good tools off of my trailer. There is the extreme. My brother needed a metric wobble socket. He is a Snap on guy. He was heading to town to buy a off brand socket, he spotted the snap on truck, and bought one socket for 40.00 Stan

Occasionally I need some special, hard-to-find tool and Snap-On usually has it. Expensive but top quality. An aircraft mechanic friend has a shop full of Snap-On tools in three big Snap-On roll around tool chests. When the FAA inspectors walk into his shop it literally blows them away. What kind of tools does he use when he really works on aircraft? Craftsman, of course, out of the toolbox in the back of his Suburban. Showmanship.

Ya, but if you'da used a Chinese hammer the head would have shattered or flew off and you'd still have your staight, dull drill bit.

A lot of Snap-On and Mac tools are made in China now, too. If I'm going to buy Chinese tools, I'll just buy them from HF and save some money.
All of my tools that I use every day are American-made Mac and Snap-On, but I don't buy much from them any more.

Friend's dad worked at an assembly plant and had a IR 3/4 impact rebuilt just before they surplused the unit and he bought it for a song. He already had several so he gave it to his son. His son doesn't work on anything that would require a 3/4 impact, so he traded it to me for a decent 1/2 impact. I used it about twice and it set for years. I bought a large disk this year which needed new blades, so got it out and started loosing the large rusted gang mounting bolts. Broke the impact shaft after loosing 3-4 of the 48 bolts. They wanted $400 to fix it. New price was $1500. Went to Harbor Freight and bought the professional 3/4 "earthquake" model for $225 and never looked back. Worked perfectly for the job and will probably not be used for another two years. Also bought a large set of cobalt bits that have worked great. Punches not so good, they are very brittle. Bought a couple sets of hand wrenches that have been abused and are still ticking.
