O.T. rain water measure.

So a 231 cu. inch engine is a 4 quart engine.Now I know what the displacement of the old GM V6 was.LOL CENTAUR
 
I find it easier to think of these things in practical terms. We all know that an inch of rain is a good, soaking, plant growing, drink of water. Well, each square foot of field gets 144 square inches of water during a 1 inch rain. So one acre would get 144 (inches of rain) x 43560 (square feet in an acre) or 6,272,640 cubic inches of rain per acre. Google says that a gallon contains 231 cubic inches of liquid.

So 6,272,640 cubic inches of water divided by 231 sq. inches per gallon = 27,154 gallons of water per acre in a 1 inch rain. Those clouds do some mighty impressive weight lifting.

And yes,I can google all of this easily. But, if I always google it, petty soon I get to be like the kid that needs a calculator to figure out how many 50 cent pieces of candy he can buy with $5 bucks.
 
In an article in a magazine about standby power presented to engineers, the stupid editor converted litres or cubic inches to gallons when describing an engine.

And in another place changed the power factor abbreviation PF to picofarads of capacitance. I need to harass that publisher.

You may recall that we launched a satellite a few years back that sailed off into oblivion because some of the engineers were calculating speeds and trajectories in metric, and others did their work in English.
 
The U.S. liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches.

The acre-foot is a common cubic measurement used to calculate the capacity/usage in reservoirs, and might be helpful to what you're pondering.

The acre-foot is just shy of 326,000 gallons. An inch of rain over an acre, then, would be just about 27,154 gallons of water.
 
It has been convenent for me to remember that a cubic foot of water is real close to 7 1/2 gallons U.S.
