SUV opinions/experience?

Hey folks,
pretty much set the pickup idea aside and am looking at a (several) nissan Xtrail both diesel and gasoline. While looking, ran across a couple Volvo XC90's that are about the same money mileage, etc. Any experience with either? B&D, feel free to dazzle me with your brilliance (or baffle me).

Thanks,

Dave

Don't know if a Jeep Grand Cherokee would be anything you would like, but I think they are the best SUV I have ever had. I had one with the Quadra Trac 4 wheel drive and it was the best 4 wheel drive I have ever driven. Wife wanted a mini-van so traded. Been sorry ever since. Everybody's opinion varies, but this is mine.

Decent jeeps are just hard to come by here unless they are way overpriced. If one comes along, it'll be in the driveway though.

In my opinion and experience, the best vehicle that fit my definition of an SUV, is a Dodge Ramcharger with a 318 and carter 2 bbl. Obsolete and ugly by todays trendsetters, but one hell of a dependable SUV

Volvo makes a darn good product. They would be my choice considering your list. I've a Saturn Vue, 6 cyl, front wheel....drive, rear wheel engages if the front tires slip...it works really well...almost 100k miles.

Hey, I live on a gravel road, a mile and a half from pavement, in snow country in Nebraska. I also own two Chevy 4wd pickups, a front wheel drive full size car and a front wheel drive mini-van.

And I can't remember the last time I drove one of the pickups because I absolutely HAD to have four wheel drive. At least several years, and umpteen snow storms ago.

I go by "Goose" out of pride. It was my official nickname in the Marine Corps. Think "Top Gun". If people take it the wrong way, that's their problem.

Seems it's got to depend much on what you want to use it for. I love my diesel K5 Blazer, but that's because I only use it as a snow-plow rig.

If I wanted a light-duty, four door, AWD cruiser with great fuel mileage, I'm sold on the new Ford Excape. But, I'm to cheap to buy one. I'm also biased and a new Ford fan since they are now the only independent USA auto company.

My driveway holds 4 SUV's - 3 Blazers, and a Trail Blazer. We use 'em for everything from pulling wagons around to Sunday transportation.
Lots of times the 4wd is the only reason we get thru. Wife works afternoon shift. They stop plowing early in the evening. By midnight, there may be some nasty conditions. As a family car, they're aren't much worse on gas than a full sized sedan and the ride is not harsh. Wife takes numbers of rabbits to shows all over the state. Let's see you do that in a car!

That's the wife's first choice also. Thing is, we have to pull a 2 ton trailer now and then. The Escapes are only rated for 1.6 ton. The Nissan and Volvo are at 2.2 ton. 2005/2006 models of all 3 run within a few hundred bucks of each other. Wife really likes the Volvo but afraid it's too nice to drive over the pasture
Mechanic we use says either one would be fine (he's steered me away from a couple bad choices).

Thanks, Dave
