Why is that evertime we buy a vehicle with tires that wear good and last long we can NEVER buy the same identical tire to replace originals with? Case in point 2003 Buick lesabre With General ameri tires size 215 70r15.car gets around good ice snow or dry car has 95,000 miles and would probably run another 10,000 and still be legal.so why can,t I purchase those same identical tires. I can find same tread in 205 70 r15 or 215 70r16 but not in the original size.I dont think I have ever bought a replacement that was nearly as good as the originals Paul

You are right, Skip.

Auto manufacturers OEM specs hold tire makers to tighter tolerances than other outlets. As a result, even comparing the precise brand/model of tire, the very best ones will be found on new vehicles.

On a related issue , 90% of consumers ready for new tires just go to the tire store and point at the car and say I need new tires and then sit in the waiting room while the dealer bilks them with his highest profit margin tire. And it's not just tires where this happens. I guess some just still have too much disposable income and are more than willing to let the "FOX" look after the "HENHOUSE"!!! Kinda like the "who's running the world" deleted posts on here lately were saying about govt.

Similar situation with other parts----The same brand replacement radiator or heater hose will never last as long as the original factory ones.

i bought some tires from Firestone some years back for a F150...best wearing tires i ever saw...got close to 40k and you cant see any wear...even still have the red and blue ink between treads...theyre Triumph brand...sales man told me they were from Korea...i figured 25 bucks a pop was worth the risk...when i wear the tires out on my Toyota its gonna get Triumphs.
these were 5 ply rated and i've had well over a ton of feed in bed more'n once.
not much snow or ice in my part of Tejas but they do good in rain.

Cure time, rubber compounds, Have changed greatly since I built tires.

I know to get more ware I used to put my new tires in the repair room pot just to make them harder.

I first started there It took about 35 min to cure a tire , when I left it was down to 23 min. and now probably even less by now.

Less cure time is softer , better ride and less mileage.

Tires that are used for new vehicles come down the production line and are graded by a tug machine. Those meeting OE grade are moved into inventory for companies such as GM & Ford. Tires that don't meet their specs are put into inventory and shipped to stores and dealers for replacement tires. Normally you should be able to go to the store and buy the same tire but the grade of balance etc might not be as good.

Goodyear Assurance TripleTred
Michelin HydroEdge
Dunlop SP
Michelin Harmony
Goodyear Assurance ComforTred

These are the top rated tires in Passenger All Season that are sold in your size.

I bought the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred and have been astounded at the dry and wet traction. I am dying to take them out in the snow!

My In-Laws buy Michelin Harmony and have been pleased.

These results come from Tire Rack where I research and buy tires. You can order your tires in and have your shop mount them if you do not have the means to mount them yourself. I save money by going to a friends shop in off hours.

I allways wondered why im never satisfied with replacement tires. I have 2 vehicles with factory tires that have been perfect - holding off replacing as long as I can to enjoy what I have now. Just wondering - years ago if you wanted a tire upgrade the dealer would work out a switch, taking off the factory tires and replacing them with your choice. Wonder if some "take off" tires are available from dealers.

Reference what is a tug machine? I worked for Firestone in Memphis for 40 years. The plant in Memphis had a large machine called a tug machine. Tires from final inspection were were run through the machine. It popped the tire on a rim, filled it with air, spun the tire a few rounds, marked the bead with some marks that represented the grade and then sent it down the conveyor. The grade had to do with balance and what they called lateral and radial run out. All OE manufactures had their specs on tires they would accept. The Memphis plant closed in 1982 and plants may use some different methods now.

Try tirerack.com I don't like to push other websites on here, but they let customers put input in on tires and provide really good feedback.

Just like cell phones, when they make something that last they don't sell enough of them to keep make'n them.
