Since I have yet to find an operators manual for my new 870, could some one please share how the transmission is supposed to be operated. I dont want to mess anything up. So far I really like the tractor, hard to get used to a gas engine from having all diesels. Also, When depressing the clutch, it seems to lug, then surge the engine. Is this normal.

The surging is normal. Select the range you want and shift the power shift without using the clutch pedal.

I remember our 970 doing that. It's been a few years since we sold it, but by my memory you used the clutch pedal to switch between ranges, but you shift on the go up or down three speeds in each range. I know when baling it worked really good because we'd start in the first speed and then bump to the second and then the third, but when it came time to tie the bale, we'd pull 'er back back into the second and then the first. Tie the bale and dump it, then repeat the cycle again.

Surge you hear is normal Always good to slow engine when you change ranges an in fact when you hear that momentary surge you will find it is easier to put in one of the 4 ranges as the input to the trans momentary stops before it changes to reverse. After you put in range(1 of 4) you want just release pedal smothly an than with 1/2 or more throttle you just puush power shifT to next power shift range . If you are in top powershift range always good to throttle back when power shifting down. Also never do stationary pto work with power shift in reverse. Also good not to shift power shift till trans is operated few minutes. Common sense .Corectly operated they are a very reliable tough transmission!
