Feterl Auger bearings

I have a 66 foot Feteral auger, the older style that's all white with the shaft on the top and bearings about every 6 feet or so. We heard it chatter sometimes but thought that was from the auger flighting hitting the tube when it was empty. This fall it busted the flange just above the gearbox ripping the tin roof off the top shaft, prompting an inspection which indicated several bearings that are missing balls.

Now I've helped with replacing bad bearings before, but the driving shaft on this auger is in two pieces and one is about 40 feet long! How do I get that out to replace the bearings?

There is a trick to this, I know there is. Also are the Feterl bearings a standard size, or are they special order?

Don"t know what Feteral uses, but some use pipe and some use shaft- can"t tell which until you get in it. My Koyker had cheap pipe, bushings went bad so I torched all out and replaced the flanges with 3 holers, and put in a new shaft and ball bearings. When the old is out, you can drill for better flanges. If already good, just dismantle. Need to do all at at once, because the pipe/shaft needs to come out. With new, clean material, the bearings will slide along quite well. Clean any paint off before slipping on new bearings.

Yeah, there IS... LOTS of emery cloth and LOTS of elbow grease!

Feterl sold a wood block cut in half to replace the ball bearing so one did not have to go the sand and emery cloth route. I own two of those augers did the first the correct way with ball bearings and lots of time to replace them. Not long after the rest of the auger went to heck. The second I used the wood blocks. Decided if the wood failed I was going to replace it with a swing away like I did the first. Good by white auger and no regrets.

did Feterl use Don Dye brgs? I have a speed king with them and they are available from brg. suppliers. Never had a Feterl, I have a Koyker, 2-Sudenga swing hoppers, the Speed King and a Bush Hog
