OT farm quad

I"m looking for a cheap 2wd quad for farm use, chasing livestock, fencing and my kids to use. There"s a 80's / 90's Honda 200 Fourtrax for sale near. Anyone know anything about these, or what it would be worth? It looks kinda odd with no racks, but a large plastic trunk behind the seat. Thanks,

What's cheap?
I've got a Jainshe Puma 250 that is a chinese rebadged Yamaha Bruin/ Beartracker that is plenty of machine. Has a rack on frt and back and shaft drive. I use mine w/ a 4'x7' trailer and it zooms right alond w/ 30 bales of hay and I drag two steel harrow fields around the pastures with it. And play a good bit also.

Had a 200 fourtrax years ago, had both racks but also the large trunk. You're probably going to need at least a 250 if you're gonna pull a small wagon/trailer with fenceposts and wire... I put a trailer on that 200 I had and never loaded it hardly any, only took about a year to loosen everything up and get it out of whack in the rear, didn't take long to wear things out. Ever thought about an older gas golf cart? Put a set or larger tires on, and a dump or cargo bed, and those things are handy for that, not to mention good for the kids. I'm thinking of going that route myself in spring.

the honda is a good machine. most of the older 2wd quads can go for anywhere from 500 to $1500 range depending on condition i have a yamaha warrior 350, and a polaris sawtooth 200 and a lil polaris 90 sportsman. the two polaris are automatics. great for newbies and the kids to zoom around on, and just plain fun to ride. also have a yamaha gas gold cart, bed on the back, has knobby tires on the rear. not bad off road, but not the greatest in mud.(buried it quite a few times, but it was soupy mud).

We probably wouldn't pull a trailer, wife wants one to move tempory fence/step in posts, and the kids just want one to learn on. We use a snow mobile for about half the year. I agree with you on the old gas golf cart....friends have one, and they go all over on it. It's usually loaded up with tools, guns etc, and really gets around well considering its not an atv.

Dave, cheap is $1000 or less. I don't need one to take the place of a truck or tractor, just to get around on. I was trying to stay away from chinese made...just cos if i buy a used one it will probably need parts, and i'd heard they can be difficult to get.

I couldn't get parts either until I stumbled across something that said they were actually outdated Yamaha. Mine is a 2005 and I ordered parts for a 2003 Yamaha. Whatever works for you though. If you get one, might as well get one with racks and at least 250cc. Get a smaller one and you'll just be disappointed when you find out you'd like to do just a little more with it.

Bought a mid 80's 250 Honda for around $700. Two wheel drive racks and it has the large trunk. Bought a plastic welder and fixed the cracks. The muffler worked but was going to die so found a tractor muffler for $28 at Farm & Fleet(used on some model Case, that was nearly the same diameter, and length. Transfered the old brackets to the new muffler. Looks OEM and I think is a little louder, but everyone else claims it is a bit more quiet. Bought and pull a small trailer. Also bought a 15 gallon sprayer that easily fits on the rear rack. Doesn't start real great at 30 degrees F, but otherwise it works fine and everyone loves it. Great machine that we use everywhere and it didn't cost much.

If it run you're probably looking at 500 bucks. If it works good probably handier the grand. For fencing you want something with a good rack to hold a pile of posts. You also want something low to the ground unless you're 6'4"...
I did a lot of that on a 300 Honda. Now have a Can-Am Craplander (outlander) 400 and it's just too high to be usefull. Got to get off to set every post... so it just takes longer and requires more effort.
Smaller is better for fencing.
4WD would be nice tho. It would have saved a lot of pounding in the mud that our 300 got...
If you must go 2WD, get a good set of deep lug/bar type tires as soon as possible.

For all round reliability & work maching you can't beat a Honda 300. But I prefer the 4X4. Used mine for 10+ years now & have only have had to rebuild the starter & probably wouldn't have had to do that if it were just me driving it---Grandkids, God love em.

From what I"ve seen and heard over the years you can"t go wrong with the older Hondas. I"ve got an "87 Model 250SX 3-Wheeler and it has been run hard without missing a beat for nearly 10 years. It had set for several years when I got it and all I had to do was rebuild the carb, change the oil and put in a battery to get it to run. I did have to spend a few bucks to replace the driveshaft and rebuild the rear end because it had been run full of water and sand but other than that all I"ve spent on it over the years is 3 batteries.
As for the racks you might be able to get them through Dennis Kirk as thye carry a large range of aftermarket parts.

Jianshe(sp)is owned by Yamaha and is basically older Yamaha technology. They have better parts availability than most other Chinese makes. A new Jianshe would be better than a lot of worn out used machines for not much more money. Dave

dave if you need atv parts i use dennis kirk or bike bandit. dennis kirk . com has a real good selection of all kinds of stuff as does bike bandit . com. bike bandit can also get a lot of parts that are no longer available from the dealer.

The 200 is somewhat small, not in the league with newer bigger machines, though not really bad. As i remember they may be chain and sprocket drive. I would examine these parts.
Chains and sprockets can be somewhat costly.

The old Hondas are nearly bulletproof. The 200 is plenty big enough to pull a trailer, though of course it will pull it slower than an 800. Use the usual amount of common sense and it will last you long enough for your grandkids to pass it on to THEIR grandkids.

Check out the Honda 250 Recon. We use ours for all kinds of light jobs around the farm. They are 2 wheel shaft drive, come with front & rear racks. Really a bullet proof & reliable little utility quad.

Wife has a 1987 Honda 200, I have a 2000 yamaha 250 beartracker. Hers is a better built machine and the reverse is much nicer to use. Mine is larger and MUCH more stable. For my money, I'd find a Honda 250-300. They are great machines. My buddy just bought one for $1100 that looks and runs new.

Don't know much about the 200 but my brother had an early 90's 300 fourtrax and that thing was great for what it was. He has a newer 350 rancher now and says he would just as soon have his old one back.

For what it's worth if you want bigger I have a 04 450M foreman. It has 2000 miles on it, gets used for what you are saying every day and then some. I pull a truck bed fencing traler with it piled up with enough pig tail post, t post, and barb wire to go around 60 acres of crop ground. I have changed tires, oil, and a fuse.

I have a Honda 300 4X4 and really like it,I can pull a pretty good load of fire wood with it.I noticed its hard to buy a good used one because no one seems to want to get rid of theirs

You cannot beat anything honda for reliability. I don't know much about the price but the farm i work at has five honda 4 wheelers, 2 rand new and 2 about 12 years old. All hondas, and they all run and ride great.
