Hey friends
My wife and I are headed up to Moline this weekend(Thu-Sun). I have an interview with JD on Friday for a summer internship next year and I have never been to IL. I have heard about a restaurant called the "Machine Shed", is that place any good? Im just a good ole Texas boy and I love good food. My wife and I always try to eat at local favorites not the run of the mill nationwide chains. I plan on spending most of Saturday at the pavillion and so on. I was hoping to drive into IA and see some wet harvest action but I think all I will see is wet. Please please give me all the pointers you can as to where to go and where not to. I look forward to seeing your great area and hopefully have a blast while on business. Thanks in advance,
Caleb

I used to travel with my old job. I have been to several of the Machine Shed restaurants. Always have been satisfied. There is one on on I80 in Iowa just before you get to Moline.

Machine Shed eateries are a chain, I believe out of Iowa. Go old fashioned, stick to your ribs food. You have got to try the baked potatoe soup before your main course. I don't think you will be disappointed. Enjoy, Billy

The Machine Shed is on the west side of the Quad Cities in Iowa. And it does have good food. A bit out of your way but not to bad. By the way Moline is one of the Quad Cities.

You can probably see more wet harvest in Illinios than Iowa right now.

If you have never seen barges pass thru the lock system on the Mississippi, that may interest you.

Then if you like to blow money there are the Casinos in the Quad Cities.

Enjoy the midwest.

My experience with the Mississippi was that I drove over it once in TN. Never been to a town on the river, I will check out the locks. I know how they work but that would be cool to see. Down here ther rivers are flat so they dredge them and barges go way inland just like that. The Army Corps are the dredgers here. As for casinos I will probably go in just to say that I have but Im a poor married college student. Thanks again and see yall soon! Caleb

The Machine Shed is one of our favorite places to eat, don't miss it. If you want a good local pizza, try Harris Pizza. Deere has a lot of stuff to see there. Rock Island Arsenal has a museum that is good. If you get here and have some time to kill, Saturday is a work day at the new Antique Engine and Tractor showgrounds on Hwy 92 east of Joslin, Ill. Come out and see our new building. Check it out at ae-ta.com
I-80 truck stop just west of Davenport has a trucking museum if you are interested it old trucks. Check out QCOnline to find out some local information. E-mail me if you want to, I'll try to think of other attractions in the area. Oh, you might ask if you can get a tour thru the JD combine plant. Chris

The Machine Shed is O.K. BUT if you wat a good steak, chicken, or about anything else, I highly recommend "The Texas Road House". It is directly across the river from Moline. Just take I-74 across the Mississippi into Iowa and take the 53rd street exit, go right, and it will be on the right at the next stop light. There is a big movie theatre, A Harely shop, and other businesses there. Any other question give me a shout

What position/division are you interviewing for? My nephew did an internship in the accounting/finance dept and got a job offer on graduation. If you make the cut for an internship, around 90 some percent get job offers at the end. For your interview, you will be meeting some very high people though you won't realize it at the time.

The Machine Shed is OK, it is south of exit 292 on I80. If you are staying at the Radisson downtown Moline, Johnny's Steak House is in walking distance as is the pavillion. If you are doing C&F Marketing, that is in the Heritage Building, the one with the copper/bronze 4 sided pointy thingy on top.

I'm with Super 99:
You can't beat them for breakfast, dinner or supper! Tried them from Rockford, Il, Davenport, Ia , Wisconsin - you can't beat them for the food and you won't look for a Cracker Barrel!

I've seen all of the deere stuff and it is worth the time to see it. I was truely suprised by the rock island arsenal museum. Lots of interesting history about Rock Island, neat buildings on the base, and nice weapons display and history of the arsenal in the museum and a civil war cemetary. I believe this is the oldest arsenal of the us armed forces. It is still a working military facility so be prepared for a armed MP in a guard shack to give you directions to the museum, kind of intimidating but definately worth your time if you like history and or weapons. If you are looking for farm action just hop on I-74 and head south and you will be in farm country in just a few minutes. Lots of nice farm ground lays along I-74 accross IL.

i been to the Machine Shed in D-Port...good food and REAL iced tea...not colored water like most places north of the Red River...theres a good mexican food place there too but i cant recall name of it...i'm 7th Generation Texan and felt rite at home.

Just hop on 80 west and run over to Walcot to the Iowa 80 truck stop great food and a neat place to explore .

Caleb;

You might check out the Amana Colonies just north of I-80 near Williamsburg. Once a seven-town commune, there are lots of wineries, antique shops, and interesting stone houses.

thanks for all the replies guys. I cant wait to check things out, just hope that theres enough time to see all that I want to see. I am hoping that I can get a tour of the combine plant but I have a feeling that my interviews Friday are going to take too much of the day. For those that asked I have been told that I am a canidate for a sales/marketing internship. The first interview I did on my campus they told me that someone with my mechanical aptitude they would like to see go into the service/support side of things. Im a Ag Systems Management major but I wokred as a full time A/C service tech for 7 years and Im currently a manager of the night shift for UPS while going to school. My goal is to get into the service end of things because thats where I think Im strongest. I think we're gonna hit up the shed first thing Thursday night when we get there and then probably pizza Friday night and who knows Saturday. Does anyone know if the factories are open for tours on the weekends? I would assume no. If theres anyone fairly close that is harvesting I might be interested in driving out to see how yall do it. Thanks for all the replies and have a great week. Caleb

Good luck with your interview; hope everything works out for your JD internship.

Y'all have a safe and enjoyable trip.
