Recently my Long 510 PTO will not enguage while the tractor is running. I can turn of tractor then enguage PTO. Any suggestions

Pretty much goes with the terriotory on the Fiat tractors.I generally idle down real slow and put it in gear. Also as others have said adjustment may work but you need the right tools or you may make it worse.

I had a 445 Long about 12 years ago and had the same problem, paid a shade tree mechanic that once worked at a Long tractor dealer to break tractor down and fix it as well as other problems that I was having, well after $1200.00 was spent for parts and labor the 445 was still doing the same thing so I sold the tractor. Really liked it but it was a pain in the but having to crank the tractor with the pto engaged just to use the bushog.

The primary release fingers on the pressure plate are the problem. One or more of them is loose (highly likely) or broken. The adjustment screw has come loose. Splitting the tractor and setting up the pressure plate to specifications is the best repair. Second best is to remove the two plates on the right side of the clutch housing and work through them. Small hands help. Hard to explain. Light/mirror in one hole, hand in the other. Tighten the loose screw and then tighten the lock nut REALLY tight. This condition must be repaired. Soon the finger(s) will loosen enough that the transmission clutch will not disengage. Extremely dangerous when that happens.
