720 JD Flat top fenders

I am just getting started in this hobby and love it! I have acquired a John Deere 720 with a starting engine. I want flat top fenders for it. Did both sides have grab handles and how many headlights? Was the mounting step located to the front of the axle or rear? Thanks!

Flat top fenders were a 30 series item.
Are you looking a for an accurate restoration or "a little of this and a little of that" restoration?

Normally, on the row crops, the step was on the front. Also, on the fenders, flat tops were for the 30 series. But, Deere was good at using what was available. I have a very late 60 with a float ride seat, and the previous owner swears it was original. I met another owner of a late 70, whose dad bought it new, and he said it came new that way. Fenders, I am sure were dealer installed then. My uncle bought a new late 620, I saw it being delivered, it came new with flat top fenders. if I see one at a show, I don't really consider it incorrect. It is your tractor, so do it the way you like it.

The 720 series had optional clam shell fenders,
not flat tops. The hand holes were only on the
left fender, they didn't want you climbing over the clutch pully. They had 4 headlights until the later console models when they went to single light fenders. The steps were optional and installed front or back.

I agree with mikeinky about the flat tops.

I'm betting many left over 20 series models were sold and the now new flat tops were installed at the dealer before it was delivered or shortly afterward by the owners.

If you want flat tops put them on. The fenders from a 4020 and such models are basicly the same fender just an extra hand hole and the cast iron mounting brackets are different. All can be bought new in aftermarket now.

the step goes where it is easiest for you to get on and off. its yours, do what you want with it. Flat tops were 30 series only option, but if ya like em put them on

I've seen a 720 with flat tops and I think they look great. A farmer in 1958 with a year old 720 could easily have gone to the dealer and ordered a set just like he could have gotten an oval muffler for it too.
If your tractor has a 3ph you will probably want the step on front of the left axle.
