O/T: Bad Knees

Well, I just came back from the Othopedic Surgeon. He says it's time for knee replacement. I first hurt it in 1964. So there is alot of wear and arthritis in it. It's severly affecting my foot causing alot of pain because I can't walk like I used to. Already have a 5-level back fusion in my back so I'm not looking forward to this new part being added.
But what I was wondering is how many of you have gone thru this and was it a big improvement? I'm going under the knife next month.

My father in law had both knees replaced, not at the same time. His knees got bad after many years of milking. He is 79 now and he says hes glad he had the replaced. He said the pain isent like it was before, but he did lose some range of motion, but at 79 he isent gonna be jumping around like a basket ball star. Good luck J

My mom had one done several years ago. You would never know she had a problem now. She walks a mile or more per day.

My mom had both hers replaced at the same time;spent 24 days in the hosp. My brother is having one done dec.2.Then the other in about a month.I will have to have one done in a few years.

A friend had knee replacement year before last (folks say he wore it out dancing),he was back on the tractor three weeks after. He's a big ole guy ,6'3" and keeps and rides horses, seems to get around just fine and doesn't limp or complain.

Have had both knees replaced and also both shoulders. 1at knee I spent too much time trying to rehab it. Second knee, Diff Doc, told me to get rid of walker after ten days and start walking a mile. Also, no knee bending machine. It is now perfect. 1st knee slight pain. Sent a friend to 2nd doc and he was back restoring tractors in his shop in two weeks. Depends on how good the doctor is and if he uses southern approach. Henry

This question has been surfaced a couple of times on this forum. I had one replaced and it it was tough sledding thru the physical therapy. Although did lose some range of motion, I don't have any pain in that knee and can enjoy activities that weren't possible the last ten years. I do avoid impact loading such as jumping off equipment and always put a pad between the knee and a hard surface. A few lucky individuals don't have any problems during therapy, while a few others have operations that read more like a horror story. The "tighter" a surgeon makes the joint, the more likely you will have a rougher time in physical therapy. The positive aspect is that a tighter joint will generally "last" longer. Not a concern if you are 75-80 years old, but something to consider if significantly younger and have an active lifestyle.

It pretty much depends on the surgeon you get. A janitorial lady at work had hers done a little over a month ago and she is so very happy she wonders why it took so long for her to get it done. She has absolutely no pain and her leg no longer is shaped like a banana.

I have had both knees replaced about five years apart. First one was done the old big cut way and used the constant motion machine. Used a cane and did all of the rehab movements. I was back milking in four weeks. This doc moved his pactice out of state so second one was done by a whiz-bang young surgeon. Little cut w/ new type knee and get up and walk with no constant motion machine. Had to go to a tharapist. That was H===. Leg never got back. I do not have the pain but just cannot get around. First leg carries all of the load. I have always wished I had been able to go to the first old doc for the second. Last doc got asked to leave the hospital,Just make sure you know what the doc is going to do and check with some of his patients.

Try googling "Arthritis honey cinnamon". A 76 yr acquaintance of mine was suffering real bad with pain in hips and knees to the point where he couldn't tie his shoe laces nor walk to the car without pain. He's been doing the honey and cinnamon for 3 weeks and he is a new guy. He still has joint problems and likely will have to be replaced at some point, but the pain has subsided tremendously.
Good luck

I'm the guy that did not have it done 20 years ago when I needed it. Didn't think I would live long enough to do it. BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE. Not a day goes buy but I wish I had done it.

To me the worst part was the wait. Mine was to the point I could not put ant weight on it without falling. I had to walk straight legged. I had quit hobby farming and a lot of other things. A week after it was done I was setting on the M. I had it done in October and started farming again the next spring. I can run, jump, and do all the other things I am not supposed too, but I don't do those things often. My best advise when you get it done is keep moveing. I was in a hospital room at 7:00pm and walking on it at 9:00pm. I used a walker for one day, a single crutch for one day, and a cane for a little while after that. My new one bend just as far as my OEM one, and I can walk three miles in 45 minutes. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am guessing you are a little older than me because I was only 37 when I had it done, but if you haven't lost much range of motion (I didn't) you should be going in no time. Good luck.

My retired co-worker told me his wife was going to have that done about 3 months ago. She had both knees done at once. She was in the hospital for one week and another week in rehab.
She's been home and getting along fine. Hal

Had mine done 3 yrs ago. Never regreted it.No pain to this day. NO it won't be like it was when you were 20 yrs old! You may not want to land on it when skydiving or use it for your sliding leg when flat track motorcycle racing etc but it will be a huge improvement over a worn out original. My e-mail is open if you have any other specific questions.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm glad to hear most of the replies are positive. I feel like I've made the right decision to go ahead with this.
