Need a source of a temperature monitor to put in neighbor"s unlived-in house - if temperature drops below a preset level, would turn on a lamp in the window to warn me. Can"t find anything in Harbor Freight, Northern Tools, mayby I don"t know what they call them. Any ideas?

A simple line voltage thermostat if wired up right will do just what you want. You wire it up so as to have a cord going in to it and a cord out. then hang it and set it so when it gets to the point it would call for heat instead it will just turn on the lamp for you

Try Bush Hardware in Sheridan Ray. My brother hooked a salimander heater to one like bolweviel was suggesting. I would imagine that's probably where he got it.

Hi Ray,

The most reliable control is called a "cold control"(aka thermostat) made for a refrigerator without a freezer. Line voltage duty rated. About $30 at any appliance parts store.

They'll have a differential(the difference between turn on and off) of about 4ºf with a adjustable knob for setting desired set point temperature of 35ºf to 45ºf or just the temperature range your wanting.

Example:
At a 35ºf setting, the light would turn on at 35ºf and turn off at a 39ºf. This is the same way your refer compressor works.

You do NOT want a cold control made for a refrigerator freezer combo as the cold control orperates on the freezer side on those units.

They work just like a wall light switch so therefor there wired the same way, as they both break the hot wire to turn off.

Any alarm company can install one that will contact you if temp drops below adjustable level. Installed many myself. If they already have a system it's an easy add-on. Or google it and find lots of options.

Ray,
I have exactly what you described.

It's called Winter Watchmen, made by Honeywell.

Try Google and see if you can find it. Got mine at an Ace hardware store years ago.

Yep, the Winter Watchman is a cost-effective solution.

A device called "Thermocube" will turn on a light. It's not adjustable, and I think it comes on around 35 degrees. Not much warning for what you're doing. Last one I bought was around 10 bucks. Farm stores sell them.

I use one in my pumphouse to make a little heat if necessary.

I will however add my two cents. If you get or build something that will turn on a light if it gets too cold then have another light that is always on so that you can tell if the power has gone out to the house or not. If you buy or build one that is lit all of the time you don't have to use the second light.
