O/T Little things are disappearing

I posted a while back about a walking plow that came up missing, Now I noticed a old blacksmith forge is gone. I can't find my new 3/8 air ratchet. My brother has a set of snapon hose removal tools missing. New box of golves can't be located. If it were mine I could say it is misplaced, but my brother is very careful with his tools. Now this started happening when my brother let a woman with her son move in and live in a motorhome on the place. If I confront either one of them it will be instant bad feelings. I am thinking of putting a game camera in my part of the shop. Anyone ever done this? Stan

If you do it, don't tell ANYONE, including your brother. and then don't accuse anyone unless/until you have ironclad proof. Still might end up with bad blood over the whole deal, but it won't be because you did anything wrong.

I had the same problem in my shop. Chains, tools,
sockets, etc started disappearing. Looked on
ebay and bought a 4 camera cctv security system
with a digital recorder. I can not think of
anything I have lost since I started recording.
Also, put a monitor in the shop so everyone
knows they are being watched. System has paid
for itself.

Just put up a well painted sign that says'

YOUR PICTURE HAS BEEN TAKEN
CALL XXX-XXXX if you'd like a copy.

Don't tell anyone you wether you do or don't or where it might be located.

Yep. And it's your call, Chief. You can discourage any more "disappearances" by making the cameras obvious, but there's something to be said for taping over the little red pilot lights on the cameras, and just get the pictures you need.

Put up the camera and get the proof. Then if you want to make a deal of it with the culprit(s) you can, or you can elect to just let all know you have a camera. If you have the proof before you tell them you have a camera then you have a choice about how to handle it. Nothing says that if you catch someone unthinkable with the camera that you have to follow through.

Seems like I would like to know who is doing it rather then warning people that you are going to do it. Once you have pictures you can do anything you like. I know I would want to know who the guilty party is for sure rather then suspect someone may or may not be guilty. With proof in your hand it will be hard to get away with lying.

Reminds me of the time a buddy of mine kept having hand tools missing. In the course of things, he bought a pickup from a nephew of mine who lived a mile down the road.

When my buddy got the pickup home, he happened to look under the seat and found most of his tools.

This might work.

That's a good one. I know an old man who had folks swipe'n gas out of his tank so he quit use'n it and filled it with water. Found several folks up the road from his house with trucks broke down and wouldn't start.

When you do get to bottom of it, odds are drugs will be involved. The game camera is a good cheap solution. Also, if there's a store in the area that buys used tools, check it out. It can't be that easy to get rid of a forge.

Someone stole my new Yamaha 25 horse motor (Bought September 4TH) off my boat last night. It was parked in my back yard. The motor was bolted on and had a motor lock on it. The Police Chief said was the second motor stolen this month.

19-20 yr. old is doing this, who can get transportation to another town to pawn them or advertise in free classified ads. Found my dad's saw that was stolen that way. If you call to answer an ad don't use your real name or address. They will ask you where you're from.

What's more important? A thief's feelings or your property? You said "motor home", if it was me, they'd start it and motor away taking the remains of an a$$whipping with them.

I a Field Camera that I used on my Xmas tree lot it works great. I use the flash to scare them off but maybe you better use the infra red to catch them and then show your brother.
Walt
PS got mine from Cabelos.com

Here's what we use is this camera that looks like a light bulb. Just install it in a light
socket that has 120 volts. You will get a decder with it to feed the signal to "video in" on your VCR. Hal
PS: They're available from Powerlinx in Tampa FL.

Would like to hear a little more about your system; looked on e-bay and prices run from less than $200 to about $1,000. My sister lives next door (though 400 yds away) and her house was burgularized yesterday.........for the second time in less than a year. Door frame was reinforced last time and metal door installed; frame held, but the door came apart at the locks. No way to keep 'em out, but we might could catch 'em after the fact. Her house can't be seen from here or from the neighbor's on the other side. Some neighbors have an alarm system, but we're 10 minutes from town and I'm not sure how much of a deterrent they are; to me, it just tells the thief he has 10 minutes to clean the place out. I suppose the recording device would need to be hidden in the attic or somewhere; if we each got one, the recorder could be at each other's house. We gotta do something.

I found running through a box of 45 Colts one afternoon, in very fast five round bursts, seemed to take care of the neighborhood kids filling the mailbox with ketchup. A couple of the pieces of tree bark that had groups that my Taurus covered were also strategically placed near the mailbox.

I know a guy who put a game camera on a drive back through some fields where his firewood was disappearing twice as fast as he hauled it out. Took the pictures to the sheriff and some kids ended up cutting some firewood to avoid charges.

Years ago when I lived in Houston, local news ran a story about a pawn shop. Seems the shop had a problem with break ins. The "good ole' boys" who ran it came up with an interesting solution.

They built a glass cage in the front of the store and put two rattle snakes in it. They posted a sign above the cage that said they snakes were turned loose in the pawn shop after hours.

The owners said they hadn't had a single break in since they did that.

The reported asked the obvious question "How do you open up in the morning? The owner said "very carefully".

If you just want to know who's doing it leave an old gas can setting out with a few gallons of gas and a quart of motor oil in it. Who ever is drive'n round smoke'n out the skeeters has sticky fingers.

37 chief,
Logical that the kid is doing it. I wouldn't think twice about "hurting" anyone's feelings over this. Get the camera, take the pix, attach a note with a $$ amount of things stolen and a big "OR" followed by the phone number of the sheriff. Chances are that if they're living in a motor home on YOUR property and swiping tools, they've got no money but I'd come down hard on this guy. Post back on the outcome.

Yep, I had a big Black Angus bull in my front field and nobody went into that field that he didn't come running up to..course he was as quiet as a mouse, he only ran up to see if you had a pail of corn..but thieves didn't know that and at night you never know what evil lurks in the heart of bulls.I think at night he would have run someone especially a stranger.

Stan, I like confrontation and threat..walk up to that little sum b!tch and tell him you want back your tools and list them, then tell him he has until tomorrow to have your stuff back or you call the sheriff....I guarantee he will sweat his azz off..use all kinds of baloney.."a neighbour saw you come out of the shed".."one of your friends talked too much".."we already know what you are doing with this stuff"..I have enough evidence to tell the sheriff that your azz is going to be in jail"....and don't worry about the relationship..who knows maybe the mother would be irrate as well that he has taken stuff. I don't see why you have to spend money on surveillance equipment..rant and rail at him and I'll bet he caves in and starts hauling this stuff out and bringing it back..I'm an old fart 62 but I weigh 220 and its mostly brawn, I'd slam him up against a wall and tell him how much time he has to get my stuff back or hes going to have a ride in an ambulance! Beleieve me I've been in somebodys face before and intimidation works wonders especially when there is a guilt factor, Ive seen the toughest kid cave in! ( I worked in a correctional facility for 9 years). Good luck Stan!

Michael, I disagree with your advice--it sounds like a real good way to end up in jail yourself and maybe being sued for "injuries inflicted". These days you can get in real trouble for physically confronting someone. Especially if you are not SURE that you are right about who stole the various items.

Odds are the kid in the motorhome probably was involved in taking the tools, but it is possible that someone else just came along and took the walking plow and forge, especially if they were outside. If there are recycling places around, you might

My advice would be to tell the motorhome people to leave. If the mother asks why, tell her that things started disappearing after they arrived. Tell her it is just not working out letting them stay there. If she gets mad, so be it.

It might not be a bad idea to talk to an attorney about what the landlord-tenant law in your state says about evicting people, even if they are paying no rent. It might be a hassle if they refuse to leave, but if you follow the procedure, it would work better than if you do something that is prohibited by the law.

But putting your hands on the suspected young man would be very perilous, and might end up much more costly than replacing all the tools if the kid stole everything. Good luck!
