battery grounding

In the older Ford tractors, when they say positive ground, does that mean the ground cable is attached to the positive post on the battery?

However, if you don't know, you need to do a little checking before hooking up a new battery. Many got changed over to negative ground, especially if they have an altenator retro-fitted.

Thanks for the responds. I have a 6volt system on a NAA Ford. Is that why my battery wouldn't keep a charge in it? I would charge up the battery and after using the tractor for awhile, the battery would be dead. My amp gauge would never indicate charging.

A 6v system should charge as well as a 12v, and the choice of ground with a generator (+ or
-) is not a factor. Sounds like you have a problem with your generator or regulator/relay.

On occasion the regulator or generator will burn out. When somebody comes upon a machine missing a battery. And connects battery - to chassis when the machine's generator was polarized + to chassis.
Probably the worst is when somebody finds a + chassis machine completely dead. And they boost or charge the battery with - to chassis. Now the battery is ruined as well. Due to being flattened then reverse charged.
