made an interesting discovery today

Howdy,

Dad and I were working on fixing the garage doors to my and my wife"s house. I hadn"t yet cleaned out the rafters in the house (previous owner left some junk in them). Anyway, I dug a box out that was fairly heavy. It had a bunch of old magazines from the mid 1960s. Turns out that several were old issues of Farm Journal and Successful Farmer. I had a nice time flippin through them and look forward to the chance to sit down and read through them. A lot of really neat old ads. Amazing to see how only about two of those old companies are still in existence today. For instance, IH used to take out 4 page ads in there. Pretty neat. God bless.

I sure wish you Kids would stop calling old from the 60s. Real Bummer to us young at heart guys. "Hell" I got underware older than that.

That is a neat find. My brother and I have been wrecking houses for about thirty years And have found a lot of different things. We found a collection of Popular Mechanics that went back to the early 50s and it took me a while but I think I read everyone before I sold them at a swap meet.

In defence of Old Fashioned Farmer I concider any magazine more than a couple of years old to be old lol.About 10 years ago I came across an August 85 edition of the Holstein Journal that happened to have the sale results of a farm called Hanoverhill Holsteins who had one of their infamous dispersals. It happened to be the one where a cow they had named Charity ended up bringing $1 450 000.00.Hanoverhill kept a half intrest in her and a herd named Romandale bought the other half. The guy who owned Romandale just happened to be the same guy who started and owned Dennison Mines, the than worlds largest uranium mine, still in opperation as far as I know. That cow was supreme champion at World Dairy Expo in Madison 5 times, and Grand at the Royal in Torono 4 or 5 as well. They used to call her "Incredible Perfection".

Yep I've got 2 "yard sale" 1953 and 54 Farm Journals here. Super interesting. About half of the magazine was for women. Recipes, patterns and the like. I love reading the small ads in the back. Some of the things they sold back then. Unbelievable.

About 10-12years or so ago I bought an old trunk that was full of old "Family Herald" and "Farmers Advocate" magazines. These were Canadian publications. They were from various years ranging from the late teens to the early 60's. I still pull a few out from time to time. Best 7 bucks I ever spent.

If you come across a full page ad for (I think shell) showing about 12 tractors- one Deere, one 560, one Case, a massey, etc I'd like to buy that mag or that page. I remember that ad- maybe in the 60's or late 50's. Good outhouse reading!
