Ford 6.9 diesel question

I put a new alternator on my 85 Ford 6.9 diesel today. When I got the old one off,I found a wire behind the bracket that had all of the coating burned off of it. It came from the glow plug wiring harness, ran down in front of the tappet cover and went into something that wraps around the fuel line between the fuel pump and filter. Anybody know what that outfit does? Is it a preheater for the fuel or some kind of sensor? I spliced a new wire into it,but have no idea if what it hooks to even works.
