Charging a two-battery set-up

Can you do damage to the alternator or regulator if you charge batteries with them still hooked up? 12 volt system, with two six volt in series?? (International 826). Could I set charger on 12 and connect Pos to the post that goes to starter and the Neg to frame bolt? Would this charge both batteries equally or as needed? Once before I charged the two batteries on this tractor separately on 6-volt mode but disconnected all cables.

you can charge them both safely...make sure you have polarity rite...some tractors have a positive ground...if thats the case your "starter" cable would actually be negative side of battery.

Just be sure that the batteries are good as bad one will keep both from charging. As the others have stated just verify the polarity and hook the chaqrger up. The starter terminal and a good frame ground is a perfectly acceptable place, safer than disconnecting a charger right at the battery. mEl

Sure, you can charge two six volt batteries wired in series and left attached with a 12 volt charger, after all thats the same as one 12 volt battery which has six cells in series, its just that three cells are in one plastic case and the other three in another........... + to + and - to - of course and dont get Pos or Neg ground confused

We charged 8 (12) volt batteries in series parallel for 24 volts. These were used in the M60 Tank. We were running cold starts at -50F. Had to pull the batteries at that temp after attempting to make a start and reinstall
another set of fully charged batteries. Then they had to be cold soaked. We did a Soviet vehicle and used the same batteries which were Sears Die Hard to make 3 starts at -65F. It was their preheat system. Ten minutes of preheat and both engines would start like summertime. Hal
