Hello folks. I am new to the JD family. I have started looking for what I think is the Model "A" or "B". What are the differences? I like the early to mid 30s (I think). I also like the spoke wheels. If I get too annoying let me know. Thanks for the info.

The A was made before the B and is bigger then the B in HP. Also the B sits lower then the A. As for the spoke wheels if the spokes are flat instead of round they are what are called cut offs and where made for rubber tires but taking steel heels and cutting them and welding a rim to them. This is a picture of my 1935 JD-B it has been in my family since 1940

Play around the house; pulling haywagon mostly. I have an 8N that's been restored & I love it, but I also like the JD. Thanks for the info.

Remember that the A's and B's from the 30's are hand start only. Either one would put around the yard with ease.

The unstyled A from the 30;s was brought out in 1934 with an open fan shaft and to buy one you need a gold mine, later ones 36 to 38; last year for unstyled, the ones you see the radiator on; in 39 they had a grill but were the same mechanicaly, in 40 they started changing the engine and 40 was the only year that engine was used. In 41 they had a bigger engine and was avaible with 6 forward speeds and was common to be on rubber with a starter.

The B was first built in 1935 as a 4 bolt model with a center fill fuel tank and for those you still need that gold mine. The 8 bolt short frame are easier to find and not as expencive, built to mid 1937, the long frame from mid 37 thru 1938 and the styled; grill instead of radiator in open started in 1939 while the 6 speed started in 1941. If you do find one on the flat spokes make sure the rims were welded on in a round fashion and not an oblong fashion as happened with most of them and with that you were rocking from side to side.

That was the way with the 1938 A we bought in 1957 and the front wheels were cut so bad you could not drive down the road for wabbeling, found a set of factory spokes to take care of that. And for the speeds in your Ford you need a 6 speed tranny, the 4 speed is only like 3rd in an 8N
