O.T., points and condenser on a Jeep

It does have a rear PTO so it's kind of a tractor! My 53 Willys jeep had an aftermarket pertronics electronic ignition installed up until it blew last week. I had it on there for the better part of nine years. I switched it back over to points and condenser but cannot get it to run. I put new points, tried two new condensers and a new coil in there and still nothing. I know it's getting power to and from the coil. I can make them spark if I use a screwdriver to open them manually, but it still gets no fire at the points when you try to start it. Any suggestions?

Heres a URL Link to my Ignition Troubleshooting Procedure, its long winded n detailed but may help diagnose the cause..

Bushings may be going bad and if that is so the electronic type will still work but points will not because they do not open and close like they should. Does it have the flat head engine and if so is it a contential or something else. Jeeps way back when could have a number of different engines. So if it is one like I have I might have a good distributor here

It's an f-head jeep engine, intakes are overhead, exhausts are flat. The points seems to be opening and closing like they should. I'm going to try the "hotwire" trick and see if my key switch has issues.

Well if you have spark at the points when you open them by hand then you have power to them and the switch almost can not be bad. You also might have a bad cap or rotor or maybe you left the rotor out??

Once hot wired (in the event that might be an issue) as in my procedure put a test lamp on the coils output (to distributor) terminal or the distributor terminal itself n crank her over n see if the light flashes ON (points open) and OFF (points closed) AS IT MUST IF SHES GONNA FIRE,, Then you gotta see if the coil fires and if so then if it gets transmitted out the plug wires to see if its a cap or rotor problem.. Its all in there n should diagnose the problem, let us know what you find.

best wishes n good luck

Yep, as the points open n close they are switching like 4 amps and when they break open you get that inductive kick from the stored energy in the coil and a lil sparking is the result so seeing that visual indicator plus my test lamp procedure described above ought to tell you something......

I'm all for points and condensors , but perhaps your electronic didn't blow and there are other problems ?
