Tire chain fitting

My tires are 16.9x30, and a local fellow has 18.4x30 chains up for grabs. Can I just cinch up the extra width with some springs stretching across the wheels?
He's asking about the same price as TireChainsdotCom is asking, minus the shipping to Canada.
Thanks for your thoughts

Go for it. Most tractor tire chains are NOT an exact fit anyhow. Rubber tarp straps work pretty good for taking up the slack. It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.

If he is asking the about the same price as the website I would pass. Suck up the extra cost in shipping and get the proper fitting tire chains or wait for some locally. I would just hate to see a tire get ruined.

They would probably work better with the longer cross chains. Less chance of the chains working off sideways.
Your may have to remove a cross chain or few as the set maybe too long.

They'll work but you may need to remove a cross chain or two depending on what type of chain it is. An 18.4-30 has a bunch more diameter than a 16.9-30...
Beyond that the price sounds rather steep. For used chains I don't think I'd want to give more than 1/2 price unless I knew exactly how old they were and how much wear was on them. They ALWAYS look better than they really are...
If you feel that they're good value I wouldn't worry about the size. Most sets are cut from the same width pattern out of a barrell anyway and then just cut to length.

Is there a Strongco supply near you? I got chains from them quite reasonable. Most chains cover several sizes of tires but if you're buying used chains that are too wide, they should be a fair amount cheaper than brand new proper size chains. Chains don't have to be tight on a tractor. I had bungee cords on my chains but took them off because the chains work better without them and self clean better because they fall slightly off the tire when they come off the ground. Dave

I never thought of chains being required in Missouri,Nevada,Texas, Oklahoma or California.
They don't even allow studded tires in Southern Ontario.

Here in southern MO, we've had BAD ice storms in two of the past three winters. Furthermore, if we get any snow, it usually starts as rain on cold but unfrozen ground. The temperature drops and rain becomes snow. That night the ground freezes and you wind up with half an inch of ice under the snow. I finally got tired of it an hunted down a used set of tire chains for my Ford 5000 (which needs some work....oh rats! another thing to do before winter!)

I have a set of chains in good condition for 18.4 X 34 tires for sale. You could cut them off to the right length. $200 International Falls, MN

Thanks, but that's 4 hours down the road from this fellow. Now, if you had the top conditioning roller for a 489 haybine for sale, that would be worth the trip!
