Ford Electric Transmission

About a year ago, I parked my 1995 Ford F-150 because the speedometer quit, and I noticed the transmission stopped shifting like normal. The junkyard guys call my tranny the "electric overdrive". E4OD, I think. Any bright ideas of what could be the problem? The transmission doesn't seem to slip, leak oil, or make funny noises. I found an electrical plugin on the right rear just above the oil pan and it seems to be okay. Boy, do I hate this computer controlled junk sold in the name of pickup truck.

The E4OD is a good transmission. We have one in an E 350 diesel cutaway that has over 300,000 miles on it. I'll try to remember what the problem was, but we thought the transmission needed rebuilding at about 250,000 miles and took it out and took it to a shop and the guy fixed it without charging much as it was a minor problem. My uncle had an issue with his 93 250 diesel with the same transmission and it was and inexpensive sensor. That truck is pushing 200,000 with no other problems. If it's not slipping and the fluid is not burnt looking/smelling there's probably a minor problem with it.

You need to replace your V.S.S (vehicle speed sensor). That is why the speedo quit and the shifting is messed up.

When I worked at the Ford dealership in parts, our transmission guy referred to these transmissions as the "E-4-OH NO!" When I worked at Jasper Engines disassembling E4OD's to be rebuilt, the cores we started with were usually pretty crappy inside...there's a separate solenoid block that unbolts from the valve body on them.

But yours sounds like a simple problem with the VSS. Replace the speed sensor and you should be OK...because the speed sensor not only operates the electronic speedo, but also helps "find" your shift points.

Thanks everybody. I'll get a vehicle speed sensor, it makes sense that it could be the fault. I was bummed out because I really like the pickup and I have been thinking it had a fatal fault.

My B-I-L has a '92 F150 4X4 that does the same thing, ONCE IN A WHILE.

He shuts it down, smacks the dash above the instrument cluster, starts it up and goes on his way.

The VSS is down on the tranny (2WD) or transfer case (4WD), so his problem is other than the VSS.

I haven't dug into it to see if the VSS signal goes the the gauge cluster, then on to the powertrain control module, but I'm wondering if that may not be the case.

ANYHOW, while the VSS (or wiring associated with it) may well be YOUR problem it's possible your problem MIGHT be like his, in the dashboard area.

Let us know what you figure out!

If the VSS doesn't fix it try the MLPS sensor that is mounted on the side of the transmission where the manual control lever is attached. Do you live in an area where a lot of road salt is used that would contaminate the Manual lever position sensor?

I know in my 96 F-350 (has E4OD tranny and 4x4) the VSS is mounted on the rear diff. Mine would quit intermittantly. Turns out the wires started to crack going to the sensor. I cleaned up and spliced the wires it has worked just fine since. I'd suggest giving that a try. I'm betting your sensor is mounted in the same place.
