Yes everyone i drive a tiny tiny saturn car back and forth to work, i"m 6"4 250 pounds and drive this thing ha ha. 35 mpg will get anybody in a tiny car sometimes. Anyways i"ve had no problems at all with this car and now it will not go into first or second gear without letting out on the clutch a bit then it grinds and slides into gear...WHAT IS IT? I really don"t wanna tear it a apart yet without knowing because i lose half of what i take off ha ha. Thank you everyone- Ted

Check fluid in the trans . If ok possible pressure plate problem ,,somethign not letting clutch release all the way

the 5 speed Saturns are notorious for the shifter cable clip breaking at the gear shift. In my case, it was an immediate loss of several of the gears (can't remember which). A small plastic clip on the end of the cable breaks, which should be a 50 cent repair, except that they don't sell it separate from the cable, which is a $400 repair. My fix was to take out the shifter and drill and tap for a a #6 or #8 screw, and use the screw and a large washer to keep the shifter end in place. Worked like a charm for years. Don't know if this is your problem but it is work checking.
