JD3010 mid? PTO Shaft

Was looking at an old Jd3010 the other day - it has what looks like a PTO shaft pointing towards the front of the tractor, located underneath the tractor, about even with the steering wheel. Can anyone tell me the purpose of this?

The mid PTO was used for a mid-mounted cyclebar mower. The down side to this was that the tractor was pretty much relegated to mowing duty (it took some time and effort to remove and re-install. The upside to this arrangement was that it allowed one tractor to both mow and pull a hay conditioner.

Some folks put a sprayer pump on 'em if the back shaft was used for something else or if they were running 2 systems..........

the Mower was a sweet outfit to run. Deere sold more tractors , because of that method ,,,LOL.. Few miles down the road from us a guy had a midmount mower on a Cockshutt.. ALL SUMMER , i try to keep the rake on SC Case , the NH 489 haybine on 800 Case , feed grinder on DC , bale forks on 430, 846 NH Round baler on the 4020, for monthes at a time , .. GOT a NICE ft Clutch DC available for quick work .. All tractors bought reasonable and are at least 40 yrs old ..,We do real good with 40 plus year old stuff ,, Just ask the Wife ..

On the '10s both PTO shafts turned the same speed set by the rear stub shaft. I the '20s the front shaft always turns 1000 speed no matter which stub shaft is in place. There is hardly a resemblence between the two eras of tractor PTOs.

JD made some mid side mount sickle mowers would connect to that drive shaft. It was also used to drive some tractor mounted cotton strippers or pickers.
