Was talking to a older fellow at church Sunday and he said it was going to be a ruff winter going by the squirrels, said every one you see has a nut it is hiding. I know there is a lot of these old signs, people talk about. So I thought it mite be interesting for all to post the weather predicting tells "signs" that they have heard.

As for all the nuts, I think it has a lot to do with the amount of nuts this year.

You can tell its going to be a ruff winter when it Oct.14 and you still have hay to bale, have not been able to roll a combine wheel, have winter wheat to plant, its still raining, predicting some snow on the 16 and another rain storm in 5 days. And you have to look at the squirrels to tell if its going to be a ruff winter?

my mother used to say if the hornets nest are high the snow would be deep,if low lil snow i always found em in both places so my coclusion is they didn't hear that one either!2 slice a persimmon seed see if it has a fork or a spoon shape inside spoon meaning (shovelsnow)fork no shovel.

If the cobs are high on the stalk, there's gonna be a lot of snow. If it's low, not so much. This year our cobs were all fairly low from what I saw...

If that's the case, we're in for it. I planted Boone County White for silage and some of the ears were so high I couldn't reach them. We only average an inch or less of snow a year though, if we get that much. It's cold and rainy already and I'm not even ready to plant winter wheat. It will be interesting to see what the next 4 or 5 months have in store.

Wettest year that I can ever remember in my lifetime. Praying for sunshine and a cool breeze here in lower Alabama, need some wind to help dry out things here. Still lots of a hay that needs cutting but can't till the rain leaves. Other crops may be in trouble if sun doesn't hurry up and come out. Skeeters are enjoying all of this wet weather and humidity. Old man Winter is more than welcome here in the south, point him in this direction.

Goes to show you what I didn't know since I've never grown corn. I was thinking it was genetics for a specific variety that determined height of ears as much as anything.
