Dirty Antifreeze

Hi all,

Had the water pump go in the chore tractor yesterday, got it fixed this morning, but when i drained the antifreeze to change the pump, antifreeze was quite dirty (brown, not oily). We had the head gasket fail back in the spring, and so the antifreeze was renewed then, so it"s only six months old... any ideas if it can be cleaned??

One trick that I learned years ago in auto mechanic school was to strain it through a paint filter. I've done that trick a few times, and while it won't make the anti-freeze just like new, it does take a lot of crud out.

Did you have the head reworked at the time you replaced the head gasket? If you did they may have hot tanked the head to clean it and in the process got a lot of muck from the hot tank into the water passages in the head. Not much to do now but flush and replace the antifreeze.

i'd give the cooling system a good flush, then replace the antifreeze. if you are not using a pre-mix, and need to add water to the antifreeze, use distilled water, not tap water. could be your water is high in minerals ect and causing excessive corrosion in the cooling system.

Sounds like you have muck in the system. I rinsed mine out by running the engine with the upper radiator hose pulled and a trickle of water filling the radiator. When the thermostat opens, you may need to increase the water flow, but in time it will run clear and clean the system. Not sure about cleaning antifreeze. I would concern myself with not fouling the next batch.
