Moving grain bins?

Bought a 1680+/- bushel sioux grain bin from a gentlemen about 25 miles away. Any advice on moving it. I almost think we could haul it on a lower trailer with out dismanteling it. Also, I beleive it is 15" wide, any one know if it is possible to get another ring to add to it? Giving me a little over 2000 bushels I"d guess. Bin was only $700, not including what it"ll cost me to lay a pad down and move it. With corn prices doing what they are right now I really wished I had built some storage last year.

For what it's worth....

I loaned my trailer (a car hauler roughly 16 ft long and 8 ft wide towed with a 1/2 ton pickup)to a friend. He has moved two grain bins(one at a time) with it recently. The weight is not the problem, rather it;s loading/unloading or road width, that may cause concern.

Best regards,

D.

I've moved several with my Donohue imp. trailer. Can you find a neighbor and use, rent it? I had to take them down to legal height and if you pull it with a tractor d.o.t. won't bother you. You will need to use bin jacks to take some sheets off and when you take the sheets off and have it up on jacks you back the trailer under it and let it down on trailer. throw some straps on it and go. Yes you can add another ring to it. Find out what gauge sheet you need by counting down from top and you do not need sheets from a 15 ft. dia. although that would be best. You can use 18 dia or even 21 ft. and start bolting them in on one side and they will spring into dia. you have.

Just thought of something else. All bin sheets are the same no matter what brand except some older ones only have one row of bolts down the side and some have two. If you find some used sheets that is the only question you need to ask.

Becareful, there are a few odd balls out there like Chief bins and Behlen bins. Also make sure you get the right gauge when adding rings. Rings get thicker closer to the bottom.

Send me a e-mail and I will mail you some pictures of the 18' bin I moved a couple of years ago. Do you have high speed internet or dial up? Dial up will be real slow with pictures. Also have some tips for you, but I'm too tired tonite. Chris

years ago we moved 2- 14' dia. bins and an 18' in one piece, lifted them with 2 loaders, set them on trailers, ran a chain &binder down from the fill hole and down the road we went, moved a 24' dryer 2 years ago but had to take 3 rings off, there is wide and narrow corrugation and need to be matched accordingly, bins that size are often free,I've seen sev. 3250 Butler gov. bins free for the taking and no cement is required

Use an old tire laying on top of inflated car tire use a short rod run chain or cable through tire so it will lift the tires up to fill hole raise just enough and lay over on small trailer. Brother built an axle type affair for back side used an old 3 point V rake frame for front side and moved a coupla small ones.

There is a guy here that moves bins on the side. He splits them in the middle, then unbolts the bottom usually at the door and spreads it with a handyman jack. He then lowers the top section into the bottom and uses the jack to pull the bottom section tight around the top section. He then chains it to a trailer and off he goes.

Couple of things...
1. All bins sheets are not the same. there is wide and narrow corregation. some have 1 row of bolts on sides and some 2. the taller the bin the thicker the sheets get at the bottom.
2. if you add a ring, it will have to be done at the top, or have your door 3 foot off the ground.
3. It will take more time and cost more than you think to do this.....
4. if you would like a price on new bins, contact me, I can set you up w/ a new Superior bin....something to think about as winter discounts are starting...
