That would be the same engine used in the Chevy LUV. Not very powerful, but you can expect over 50 mpg. Should be the same trans as used in a LUV. I only knew 1 guy who had one and said it was long lived.

That would be an Izuzu 4 cyl. Very reliabe, but very underpowered. If you put a 5spd behind it you indeed get 35-45 mpg, just wont get there fast. Caseys General Store Corporation used to buy alot of them. A former employee would bye up every one he could get at 200,000 and then drive them till they disappeared from rust, but the motor would still be running. Chris

it has a 5spd in it but the guy ran it out of grease the trany is junk im have hard time finding one the truck has under 80000 miles on it

Great engine but hard to get parts for. I have several in S10s and Isuzu PUP 4WD trucks.
Isuzu built the 1.8 and 2.2 diesels used in small cars and trucks from existing gas engines. Subquently, parts are scarce. Don't confuse them with similar looking small Isuzus used in Thermoking reefers, etc.

I don't believe some of the fuel mileage figures Ive heard. They seem a bit exagerated to me.

My S10 2WD diesel has never gotten better then 36 MPG and 32-34 is more the usual. My 2.2 diesel Isuzu 4WD mini-truck gets 27 MPG at best, but it does not have overdrive. If it DID have overdrive, I doubt I'd get much chance to use it. Too many hills here and too little power.

I have two 1981 Chevy Chevette diesels. Both have the smaller Isuzu 1.8 liter engines, and they both get, on average, 45 MPG on highway runs. Since they are small, light, and have overdrive, I can't figure how an S10 truck is going to do as good or better.

And yes, as others have stated, a 2.2 only makes the power of a 1.6 or 1.8 liter gas engine, so don't expect much power.

I have an old s10 diesel and it has been a daily driver for almost 5 years and it has been very dependable. As for the transmission mine is a four speed and I have been told it is a gm t5. You should not have a lot of trouble finding a transmission at a salvage yard as I am told the t5 was common in the gas burner s10. Someone correct me if I am wrong. J.D. Maris will surely know what will work.

I was looking for a T5 transmission to put in my Hudson some years back- set up a search on eBay, and there were usually 1 or 2 at any given time. Don't get the one used in cars, with shifter located back by the tailshaft- you need the one with the shifter mounted up front. I ended up finding one at a swap meet for $175. EBay ones were generally about $250. Check Craigs List as well- it seems to be getting more popular as eBay withers.

I have had 3 small trucks with diesel engines.First 1981 Toyota I drove it about 100 thousand miles then my son drove it another 100 thousand power was good. Then S10 diesel power was fair no trouble with it.The last was Isuzu diesel with turbo this truck was the best lots of power good fuel mileage. Isuzu rusted real bad.Frame rusted out at back of cab.S10 rusted some also only repair was clutch. On all of these trucks I took factory fuel filters off and put John Deere filter base and filter. A lot cheaper to change.

i check one out of a gas the input shaft is longer and smaller but it was a couple of years newer i found one they want 175.00 for it pluss 75.00 for shipping and it has a bronk tail shaft housing
