Is it possible to run 540 equipment with a tractor that only has a 1000 pto and if so how do you do it and will it hurt the equipment

That depends on the internal gearing of the tractors PTO reduction. On 1210 and 1410 Case/DB's that I used to have they had the two speed on the PTO shifter. Owners manual said for light work, like a fertilizer spreader you could set the PTO in 1000 and run the tractor at 1400 to save fuel. To get full speed rated RPM was 1900 or 1950 (its been a few years).

Check to see if Your tach shows the PTO RPM on it. IF NOT... If Your engine is rated at 2000 engine RPM. & the PTO is 1000; Then for every 2 turns the engine goes it will be 1 rpm at the pto. So 1080 engine RPM is 540 at the PTO.

Simple equation... Rated Engine RPM divided by 1000 PTO. times 540 PTO. = needed Engine RPM.

I was taught this by a gentleman who used a JD 4520 (150hp) to pull a JD round baler. He did this for years. He also had a device to stop the throttle from going past what was needed! Scotty

I have a new 15' Bush Hog I ran with my Magnum 7240 this summer. Looks like my tractor and yours are about the same size. I got a 540 mower because I didn't want to bust up a drive line/void a warranty by attempting to put 200 hp through something that was never meant to take it. One of the choices on my dash is pto rpm, so I just tried to keep it where it should be. I think the engine rpm turned out to be around 12-1300. Even then the large 1000rpm shaft to 540 adaptor has a little twist started!

Some balers are made so you can turn the gear box around on them and go from 540 to 1000. Only time I have ever been around a 1000 tractor trying to use 540 equipment was a 15 bush hog on a ford tw30. If idled it down to where it didn't sound like the bush hog was going to come off the ground it would choke down when ever you went from corn stalks to fescue water way. Guy I was working for gave up and used another tractor.

Don't forget drawbar length which affects U-Joint alignment. A 540 outfit is supposed to be 14" from the tip of the shaft to the center of the drawpin.

I was told that the JD 530 round baler could have this option to turn the gearbox but I do not know this for sure. Haven't checked with JD to find out for sure. Does anyone know if this is factor fiction?

Plowman I run my 10"x62' grain auger{540} on 1000 rpm shaft with a 756 IH german deisel {75 hp] it works fine. Just do not turn your shaft over 540 rpm or you will tear the hell out of your baler . If your baler is a big round baler I doubt if the tractor will pull it .Light loads will work but heavy pto loads will bring a big tractor down on 1000 pto if set up for 540. Been there and done it. Good luck Wildman

(quoted from post at 10:09:04 10/11/09) I was told that the JD 530 round baler could have this option to turn the gearbox but I do not know this for sure. Haven't checked with JD to find out for sure. Does anyone know if this is factor fiction?

Yes this is correct. It's common to flip gearbox on several kinds of pto driven implements to change rpm's.
