Got chimney swifts in flue...any suggestions on getting rid of them??

This is a double flue chimney...serving wood furnace in basement as well as fireplace in living room on main level. Haven't used fireplace in many, many years and haven't used basement flue in 5-6 years. I want to use basement (wood furnace) flue next year when I have time to start cutting/processing firewood. This is the 2nd or 3rd year we have had the birds.

Oh yeah...I'll use the loader on my 4610 Ford to serve as a platform to work from!!

Thanks in advance from any comments...serious or otherwise.

Can you put a rain cap on it?Depending on how it's made it may keep the birds out.Another suggestion would be to put a cat in there, but than how do you get the cat out????

Rain Cap & FIRE...Have thought of both and will do one when appropriate. BTW: Roasted or fried?? LOL!!

Seriously...will put a cap on when birds are gone and chimney has been clean. They are nesting in there and we hear the little one cheep when food is delivered.

Just gotta figure out how to get them to leave???

Hang a good chunk of steel to a rope or chain and drop it down from the top. That'll knock them loose. Clean it out the bottom, then brush the chimney clean.
Don't take a chance on putting fire in it until you know it will draw, otherwise you're going to have a house full of smoke.
Your local fire department will have just such a device bought or made up for opening chimneys like that, or should... Around here we'd probably lend it out with a small donation in mind...
