OT: Axle Rebuild dilemma...need help!!

Hey guys, I"m rebuilding the Chrysler 8.25 axle in my fiance"s Liberty. The pinion bearings wiped out of it with 73,000 miles on it..grr. Anyway, I press all new bearings on everything. I put the pinion back in WITHOUT the crush sleeve or seal, and just snug the nut until the axial play is gone. I put the ring gear in and set that to check the pattern. It was perfect. So, I take it apart, put the crush sleeve on, put the outer bearing in, tap the seal in, put the yoke on, put the nut on and run it down. I torqued it to 210 ft/lbs as per the FSM. There is still a fair amount of axial play in the pinion. I figured maybe there was some resistance in the nut since it had that dry threadlock stuff on it, so I tightened the nut a bit further. The play is not gone and I started to pull the threads out of the nut . What"s wrong here??? It"s almost like the crush sleeve isn"t crushing, but is that even possible?? I"m so aggravated with this right now and I really need to get this thing fixed tomorrow!!!!! I"ve done tons of axles in the past and never had a problem before. Any ideas???!?!?

Some crush sleeves can be a #$%^*$#.

I've actually used a press on on a new sleeve to start the crushing process.

Whether or not you could try that depends upon how much play you now have without the sleeve being crushed... obviously you don't want to crush it beyond the correct preload point in the press.

It's still got about 1/4" to go. I trashed the pinion nut I had it so tight. The threads started to pull out of it. It gacked the threads on the pinion a bit, but I can probably fix them with a file. This thing is driving my nuts. Maybe I'll try the old crush sleeve and see what happens. Ugh

I suggest you oil the threads on the pinion shaft. The torque on the nut isn't what matters, it's the preload, which is typically measured in inch-pounds.

In the last month I have replaced the bearings in a 04 and 05 chebby P-ups,,, 04 50K on the clock and 05 low 40's,,, they are knock'n the carrier bearings out.

Not that I am complaining it pays well,,, the 04 noise was hard to nail down,,, I would have bet my arse it was coming from the front,,, after that it made the 05 a no brainier.

The jeep can B a bear to crush the crush sleeve,,, Bobs advice to pre crush a tad is worth a try,,, I am think'n I have also wiped the treads out on a nut set'n a chry. up. Both chevy's pulled up right EZ,,, to EZ for me,,, the 05 pulled up so EZ it got to tight and I had to pull the crush washer and start over.

I am think'n yours has a big thick washer tween the nut and yoke,,, if so make sure its their
