yard lights

I'm trying to get the electric bill down a bit. I've been swapping out regular light bulbs for the CFL bulbs and I see they make them for yard lights. I have 3 yard lights on my place. One is a CFL type, one is a 70 watt amber colored HP sodium and the last is a 175 watt mercury vapor. The 70 watt HPS puts out about the same light as the 175 mercury vapor. I'm pretty sure I can't put the fluorescent bulb in one of the other non fluorescent fixtures, but can I put a smaller wattage HP sodium bulb in place of the 175 mercury vapor bulb?

we replaced 300 incand. bulbs for compact flor.bulbs with built in starter transf. burn 68watts put out 300watts get the highest kiol. which is called white light and cost around 17.00
are happy so far

Unless an electrican comes in that knows for sure, my answer would be no. I just went thru this bulb/fixture question last week with an electrical supply house. I needed a mercury vapor replacement bulb and he says mercury bulbs arent being made anymore. we went thru the options and ended up with a new soduium fixture - he told me that all these type bulbs are matched to the ballast to work therefore just screwing in a different bulb is a bad idea.

I don't know if you can swap bulbs or not. If not, I'd replace the whole light. I replaced two 500 watt halogen floodlights with two 27 watt floods.Quite a bit bigger for the reflector, but just as much light and much easier on the eyes.

Unfortunately the answer is NO. Mercury and sodium lamps require totally different ballasts - also starter in the case of the sodium.

Your cheapest solution is to gut the mercury fixture, replace the mogul thread merc lampholder with a standard screw thread lampholder then stick a CFL in it.

I"ve used the regular cfl bulbs outside and they don"t last long at all. For that matter they don"t last long inside either. Didn"t know about the outdoor bulbs.
