Farmall 450 Won't Charge (12 V Pos. Ground)

I have a Farmall 450 12V, positive ground that refuses to charge. I have replaced the solenoid, generator, and voltage regulator with no luck. However, when the field terminal on the voltage regulator is grounded, the tractor charges very well. I replaced the field wire going to the generator with no avail. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

chances are the brushes in generator are worn...not enuff juice coming out to energize coil in regulator...seen it more n once.

Grounding the field terminal and it charges tells you that the generator is charging and that the charging circuit is good. You need to find out why the field circuit is not grounding as it should. The generator and the regulator both need to be very well grounded for them to work. Hope this helps.

No, the wire will cause the generator to overcharge the battery by preventing the voltage regulator from working.

I can't speak about Farmall, but lots of early 12 volt JD tractors were positive ground until they went to alternators with airconditioned cabs about 1969.
